Twaalf jaar na zijn afscheid bij FC Groningen speelt Virgil van Dijk vanavond met Oranje in de Euroborg de WK-kwalificatiewedstrijd tegen Malta. De verdediger is terug op de plek waar hij doorbrak als voetballer, droomde van FC Barcelona en de dood in de ogen keek.
Je bent er toch wel bij?, had Van Dijk hem vorige week nog gevraagd. Maar helaas, een dag voor Nederland-Malta stapte FC Groningen-trainer Dick Lukkien in het vliegtuig voor vakantie. “Natuurlijk baal ik”, zegt Lukkien. “Virgil terug in de Euroborg. Daar had ik bij willen zijn.”
Lukkien was vijftien jaar geleden ook al werkzaam bij FC Groningen, maar dan als coach van het tweede elftal. In de zomer van 2010 kreeg hij een negentienjarige Brabantse jongen in zijn selectie, die bij toeval ontdekt was door de club.
Op weg naar jeugdwedstrijden in België was een van de Groningse scouts langs Tilburg gereden. Nog even snel Willem II A1 tegen PSV A1 meepakken, je weet maar nooit.
Achterin bij de Tilburgers maakte een centrale verdediger indruk, ene Virgil van Dijk. Toen de scout informeerde, bleek het tot zijn verbazing om een amateur te gaan. Niet veel later lag er bij FC Groningen een contract voor hem klaar.
Lukkien moet lachen als hij terugdenkt aan de eerste maanden van Van Dijk in Groningen. “Ik heb in die tijd wat robbertjes gevochten met Virgil. Het was een een groot talent. In kleine partijvormen op de training kwam hij nooit in de problemen.”
Probleem was alleen dat Van Dijk niet topfit was. “Bij Willem II draaide hij mee met drie teams: de A1, het tweede en het eerste. Daardoor ging hij van wedstrijd naar wedstrijd, maar had hij maandenlang weinig getraind. En zeker niet volle bak.”
Zijn nieuwe club trok een half jaar uit waarin Van Dijk – die in Groningen voor het eerst op zichzelf ging wonen – topfit moest worden. En kon wennen aan het leven als prof.
“Maar Virgil had in zijn hoofd dat hij snel zou aansluiten bij het eerste elftal”, zegt Lukkien. “Het ging hem niet snel genoeg. Een talent kan dan nukkig worden, maar Virgil bleef altijd respectvol. Het belangrijkste was dat hij doorhad dat ik het beste met hem voorhad. Zoals de hele club FC Groningen dat had. En toen hij eenmaal fit was, maakte hij snel zijn debuut.”
In de laatste weken van het seizoen had Van Dijk definitief de stap gemaakt van de beloften naar het eerste elftal, met als persoonlijk hoogtepunt de kolderieke play-offwedstrijd op 29 mei 2011 tegen ADO Den Haag. “Dat was een speciale dag”, zei hij er maandag zelf over bij Oranje.
Met rugnummer 48 begon Van Dijk die middag als rechtsback. Hij ging in de fout, waardoor Lex Immers scoorde voor ADO, dat de heenwedstrijd al met 5-1 had gewonnen. Met Van Dijk als stormram in de aanval speelde FC Groningen vervolgens alles of niets.
“Ik nam een hele slechte vrije trap, maar die ging er wel in. Ik scoorde nog een keer. We kwamen dichtbij, maar uiteindelijk redden we het net niet.”
Het was de doorbraak van Van Dijk, alleen wel als aanvaller. Lukkien: “Maar we hebben nooit getwijfeld, Virgil is verdediger pur sang. In zijn tweede seizoen werd hij centraal achterin een vaste waarde. Hij werd heel snel, heel goed. En hij wilde meer. In die tijd had Virgil de wereldtop al in zijn hoofd. En dat sprak hij ook uit.
Treffend voor die ambitie was het eerste interview met Van Dijk in Het Dagblad van het Noorden. “FC Barcelona is uiteindelijk doel is”, was de kop. Het waren een wonderlijke woorden voor een Eredivisie-speler, die pas anderhalf jaar prof was.
Nijland doelt daarmee op het voorjaar van 2012. Dagenlang liep Van Dijk rond met buikpijn en koorts. Zo erg dat hij tegen huisgenoot en ploeggenoot Tim Keurntjes zei dat hij naar ziekenhuis wilde. Keurntjes bracht hem het naar Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen, maar daar ging geen alarmbel af. Met wat medicatie tegen buikgriep reden Keurntjes en Van Dijk terug naar hun appartement.
Een dag later spuwde Van Dijk gal. Toen zijn moeder langskwam, schrok ze van de toestand van haar zoon en bracht hem meteen terug naar het ziekenhuis. Een acute blindedarmontsteking was de diagnose. In combinatie met een buikvliesontsteking en een niervergiftiging.
“Ik heb de dood in de ogen gekeken”, zei Van Dijk jaren later in een documentaire van ESPN over de bijna twee weken dat hij in het ziekenhuis lag. Hij viel acht kilo af. “De dokter zei dat een minder fit persoon het sowieso niet had overleefd.”
“Ik zie het nog zo voor me: Van Dijk die rondjes loopt om het trainingsveld”, zegt Maaskant. “De hele voorbereiding trainde hij aangepast. Maar toen de Eredivisie begon, stond hij er. En hoe. Hij had een fantastische trap en een enorm inzicht. En hij durfde teamgenoten aan te spreken.”
Maaskant kan zich een situatie nog goed herinneren, thuis tegen Ajax. “Virgil stond samen met Kees Kwakman achterin. Kees stond te snurken. Hij hield zich niet aan zijn taak, waardoor Ajax scoorde. Door de fout van Kees leek het of Virgil ook stond te snurken. Nou, dat kreeg Kees te horen van hem. Ook al was die bijna tien jaar ouder.”
Van Dijk was zelf ook niet helemaal foutloos. “Virgil kon licht nonchalant zijn”, zegt Maaskant. “Misschien wel omdat het hem te makkelijk afging.”
Van Dijk had die stap wel willen maken. Nijland: “Aan het eind van zijn derde seizoen kwam hij mijn kantoor binnen en zei: “Directeur, ik ben toe aan een volgende stap.” Feyenoord had geen geld. Virgil dacht zelf aan Ajax of PSV. Maar die kwamen niet.”
“Ik heb nog gebeld naar Marc Overmars, waarmee ik een goede band had”, vervolgt Nijland. “Die ging destijds nog over de transfers bij Ajax. Neem Van Dijk, was mijn tip. Maar Ajax ging liever voor Mike van der Hoorn van FC Utrecht.”
Uiteindelijk was het Celtic dat in juni 2013 wel een kleine 3 miljoen euro voor Van Dijk wilde betalen. Daar in Schotland begon de internationale opmars van de verdediger, die via Southampton voor 85 miljoen euro bij Liverpool belandde.
Maaskant: “Als een speler zich aanpast aan het niveau waar hij komt, dan is het een goede. Maar als hij er steeds snel bovenuit steekt, dan is het een wereldtopper. Zo is het elke keer met Van Dijk gegaan. De top van Nederland heeft zitten slapen.”
Nijland: “Ik heb hem in eerste instantie ook onderschat. Vanaf het moment dat Virgil als amateur van Willem II naar FC Groningen kwam, heeft hij constant alle verwachtingen overtroffen. We hebben hier de Koemannen gehad, Arjen Robben en Luis Suárez. Van Dijk hoort in dat rijtje. Als FC Groninger ben ik trots dat hij straks als aanvoerder van Oranje in de Euroborg staat.”
Twelve years after his departure from FC Groningen, Virgil van Dijk is playing tonight with Oranje in the Euroborg in the World Cup qualifier against Malta. The defender is back in the place where he broke through as a football player, dreamed of FC Barcelona and stared death in the face.
“You will be there, right?” Van Dijk had asked him last week. But unfortunately, a day before Netherlands-Malta, FC Groningen coach Dick Lukkien boarded the plane for vacation. “Of course I regret it,” says Lukkien. “Virgil back in the Euroborg. I would have liked to have been there.”
Lukkien was already working at FC Groningen fifteen years ago, but as coach of the second team. In the summer of 2010, he got a nineteen-year-old boy from Brabant in his selection, who was discovered by chance by the club.
On the way to youth matches in Belgium, one of the Groningen scouts had driven past Tilburg. Quickly catch Willem II A1 against PSV A1, you never know.
A central defender, one Virgil van Dijk, made an impression in the back of the Tilburg team. When the scout inquired, it turned out to his surprise that he was an amateur. Not much later, a contract was ready for him at FC Groningen.
Lukkien has to laugh when he thinks back to Van Dijk’s first months in Groningen. “I fought some battles with Virgil during that time. He was a great talent. He never had any problems in small party forms in training.”
The only problem was that Van Dijk was not in top condition. “At Willem II he participated with three teams: the A1, the second and the first. As a result, he went from match to match, but had trained little for months. And certainly not full throttle.”
His new club took half a year in which Van Dijk – who lived on his own for the first time in Groningen – had to become top fit. And could get used to life as a professional.
“But Virgil had it in his head that he would quickly join the first team,” says Lukkien. “It didn’t go fast enough for him. A talent can then become sullen, but Virgil always remained respectful. The most important thing was that he realized that I had the best interests at heart. Like the whole club FC Groningen did. And once he was fit, he quickly made his debut.”
In the last weeks of the season, Van Dijk had definitively made the move from the promises to the first team, with the comical play-off match against ADO Den Haag on May 29, 2011 as a personal highlight. “That was a special day,” he himself said on Monday at Oranje.
Wearing number 48, Van Dijk started that afternoon as right back. He made a mistake, causing Lex Immers to score for ADO, who had already won the first leg 5-1. With Van Dijk as a battering ram in attack, FC Groningen then played all or nothing.
“I took a very bad free kick, but it went in anyway. I scored again. We came close, but in the end we just didn’t make it.”
It was Van Dijk’s breakthrough, but only as an attacker. Lukkien: “But we never doubted, Virgil is a defender pur sang. In his second season he became a permanent fixture in the center back. He became very fast, very good. And he wanted more. At that time, Virgil already had the world top in his head. And he also expressed that.
Striking for that ambition was the first interview with Van Dijk in Het Dagblad van het Noorden. “FC Barcelona is ultimately the goal,” was the headline. Those were wondrous words for an Eredivisie player, who had only been a professional for a year and a half.
Nijland is referring to the spring of 2012. Van Dijk walked around for days with abdominal pain and fever. So bad that he told housemate and teammate Tim Keurntjes that he wanted to go to the hospital. Keurntjes took him to the University Medical Center Groningen, but no alarm bells went off there. Keurntjes and Van Dijk drove back to their apartment with some medication for the stomach flu.
A day later, Van Dijk vomited bile. When his mother came to visit, she was shocked by her son’s condition and immediately took him back to the hospital. An acute appendicitis was the diagnosis. In combination with peritonitis and kidney poisoning.
“I stared death in the face,” Van Dijk said years later in an ESPN documentary about the almost two weeks he was in the hospital. He lost eight kilos. “The doctor said that a less fit person would not have survived it anyway.”
“I can still see it so clearly: Van Dijk walking around the training field,” says Maaskant. “He trained modified throughout the entire preparation. But when the Eredivisie started, he was there. And how. He had a fantastic kick and enormous insight. And he dared to address teammates.”
Maaskant can still remember a situation well, at home against Ajax. “Virgil was in the back with Kees Kwakman. Kees was snoring. He did not stick to his task, causing Ajax to score. Because of Kees’ mistake, it seemed as if Virgil was also snoring. Well, Kees heard about it from him. Even though he was almost ten years older.”
Van Dijk himself was not entirely flawless either. “Virgil could be slightly nonchalant,” says Maaskant. “Perhaps because it was too easy for him.”
Van Dijk would have liked to have taken that step. Nijland: “At the end of his third season, he came into my office and said: “Director, I am ready for the next step.” Feyenoord had no money. Virgil himself was thinking of Ajax or PSV. But they didn’t come.”
“I also called Marc Overmars, with whom I had a good relationship,” Nijland continues. “He was still in charge of transfers at Ajax at the time. Take Van Dijk, was my tip. But Ajax preferred Mike van der Hoorn from FC Utrecht.”
In the end, it was Celtic that was willing to pay just under 3 million euros for Van Dijk in June 2013. There in Scotland began the international rise of the defender, who ended up at Liverpool via Southampton for 85 million euros.
Maaskant: “If a player adapts to the level he comes to, then he is a good one. But if he quickly rises above it, then he is a world-class player. That is how it has gone with Van Dijk every time. The top of the Netherlands has been asleep.”
Nijland: “I also underestimated him at first. From the moment Virgil came to FC Groningen as an amateur from Willem II, he has constantly exceeded all expectations. We have had the Koemans here, Arjen Robben and Luis Suárez. Van Dijk belongs in that list. As an FC Groningen fan, I am proud that he will soon be standing in the Euroborg as captain of Oranje.”
