Even before we have heard a note of Taylor Swifts new album , The Life of a Showgirl is already flying over the counter. The singer winds the market one after the other, but also harvests criticism.
Anyone looking at Swift’s social media is in her merchandise store. The singer advertises with different LP and CD versions of her new album. The Shiny Bug Vinyl Collection , the Baby, That’s Show Business Vinyl Collection and the Tiny Bubbles in Champagne Vinyl Collection are all available for a limited time.
All these different versions stimulate the sale of The Life of a Showgirl , but Swift really doesn’t need that. According to Forbes, the singer has been guaranteed in advance since the end of 2023 and a number 1 position for the album. No international pop star dares to release an album at the same time as Swift.
Critics say that Swift dries out her fans as much money as possible, but the LPs are in great demand for those so -called ‘Swifties’. Stephanie van Tol, editor in the radio program Vera On Track , is no longer one of them. At a previous album release of the superstar for 3voor12 she wrote an article in which she spoke with fans who, like them, are critical of Swift.
“The fact that she only speaks out about social themes when it comes to her and promoting her products continuously,” Van Tol tells Nu.nl. “You see more artists releasing LPs in different colors, but Taylor really goes through with more than twenty versions of an album that we have not heard of anything yet.”
Taylor Swift as a big sister or good friend
Swift and her team cleverly tackle it. They give something unique every vinyl version: a different cover, a bonus track, a demo. Despite the objections because of the environment and the high costs, ‘Swifties’ go in.
“For the fans, these are collector’s items that you should have,” says Simone Driessen, assistant professor of Media & Popular Culture at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. She investigated the fans of Swift.
‘Swifties’ often see the singer as someone in whom they can move. “A big sister or good friend,” says Driessen. “They want to know and possess everything from Taylor. They have so much love for the artist that they want to support her in all areas.”
“It’s a bizarre dynamic,” says Van Tol. “A friend would never expect you to spend so much money on her.” She noticed in conversations with fans that they felt obliged to buy things. “Even those who thought it wry participated.”
‘She plays in the feeling that you can’t miss something’
“Taylor has become very good at selling the same product in different ways,” says Annelot Prins, who does a PhD American Cultural Studies in Berlin and specializes in Swift.
“She plays on the feeling that you can’t miss something as a fan. Once go to her Eras Tour was actually not enough, because she sang different surprise numbers every night. And if you don’t have all the demos and bonus tracks on record, you don’t have the whole story.”
Driessen thinks that the way Swift earns her money is an example for other artists. “In times of streaming, to which artists do not earn much, she offers her fans something unique for which they are willing to pay. Many fans want a physical product.”
‘Other artists are doing it against billionaire’
Prince fears that the dominant position of Swift in the music industry leads to inequality. “She has the money to have so many vinyls printed and earn even more with it. You hear that it is already financially difficult for other successful artists to go on Tour. They are completely against billionaire Swift. This shows how financial investments for a musician are at least as important as artistic ideas.”
She sees that record companies have unreasonable expectations of artists due to the success of Swift. She quotes an interview with the American pop artist Halsey. She said she was not allowed to make a new album after disappointing success of her previous album. “She sold 100,000 copies in the first week. That is not bad at all, but besides Swift it is disappearing.”
Prins wants to ensure that the criticism of Swift becomes personal. “It makes no sense to call her the devil or a bad person. It is much more interesting to see how culture has become such a revenue model, especially in the music industry. Taylor is very good at that, but the problem is greater than herself.”
Whether her marketing strategy is neat or not, there is eagerly eagerly looking for The Life of A Showgirl . On Spotify, an album has never been stored so often in advance: five million times.
Driessen expects that all those different LP versions will gain more meaning once we have heard the music. “She plays different characters on the album covers. The fans are already fully speculating about their meaning, as belongs to a new Taylor album.”
