Now+ spiders belong to autumn, but why?

Spider

Spiders in your windowsill, on the ceiling, in cracks and holes. Autumn is a real spider season. Where do they come from and do they leave again?

In the fall it suddenly stands out: a thick spider on the kitchen cupboard, degraded webs for your window or a spider that hangs in a web at the top of your window frame and does not seem to be going to go away ever.

Does it seem like suddenly an invasion or a scourge is going on? That is not the case, Sanne van der Mark explains. She is team leader cold -blooded at the Insectarium of Artis. There are not more spiders in the fall, but they stand out more.

Autumn is mating season for spiders

“A spider will be born around May. Then it is very small. A spider has to shed a few times. Then they are very vulnerable with their soft body and sealed exoskelete. They hide well. Then you see few spiders, but they are there. In the fall, if it gets a bit colder, we are now big enough and they will look for each other.”

It is still nice and warm outside and there is still enough food. If it gets colder, the spiders will look for a warmer spot – they remain cold -blooded animals and cannot keep their temperature constant. “They also love outside, spots between the dead leaves where they can catch critters. If they can catch enough food on your ceiling, they will go there.”

A spider is a real insect eater, Van der Mark explains. They will not look for breadcrumbs in your kitchen cupboard. “That’s why they are so useful. Nasty fruit flies, silverfish, ants, mosquitoes all eat them.”

There are about six hundred spider species in the Netherlands, but the spiders that you find in the house are usually the cross spider, the vibration spider and the house spider. They are no larger than about three centimeters.

‘They are beautiful’

In the Artis Insectarium, cold -blooded expert Van der Mark often sees visitors reacting violently in the big spiders. “It is often the parents who call against their child” Look what scary, what dirty, what a terrible spider! ” And then they find me very clever that I work with spiders. “

“I don’t understand the fear, but I do see a lot of frightened people. I just explain that a spider really doesn’t love people and prefer to love us at a distance. And that they are wonderful if you look closely.”

That many people are afraid of spiders is correct. About 3 to 6 percent of the Dutch suffer from arachnophobia: an unreal fear of spiders.

“A spider phobia can proceed from parents to children,” Psychologist Maartje Kroese explained earlier. The phobia can also be caused by a nasty experience or by stories about spiders. “The type of spider that people fear can vary. We see in practice that almost always applies: the larger and the faster, the narrower,” Kroese explains.

Biologist Geert-Jan Roebers explains the fear by looking at the external characteristics of the spider, such as the poison jaws. “Spiders only bite when they get into the pinch and sometimes to defend their brood,” he says. “Of most spiders, the jaws are also too weak to penetrate the skin.”

“In the Netherlands, only three species succeed, the red -white cell spider of which is the ‘dangerous’. His bite feels like a wasp sting and is not dangerous, but painful. About six hundred species spiders live in the Netherlands and they are very useful to maintain our ecosystem. They ‘clear’ and are food for the Vogels again.”

What also do not do spiders, says Van der Mark: crawling in your mouth while you sleep. “That is really a sandwich monkey story. A spider in your house prefers to hang nice and high in his web, where he can catch prey, and also leaves when it gets warmer outside.”

Does it seem Like there is Suddenly An Invasion Or A Plague Going On? That is not the case, explains sanne van der mark. She is Team Leader Cold-Blooded at the Insectarium of Artis. There are not more spiders in the fall, but they are more noticeable.

That many people are afraid of spiders is correct. About 3 to 6 percent of the Dutch Suffer from Arachnophobia: an Irrational Fear of Spiders.

“That only works in three species in the Netherlands, or which the red-white cell spider is the ‘most dangerous’. Its bite feels like a Wasp sting and is not dangerous, but it is Painful. There are about Six hundred species of spiders or landsherland’s oehlanders ecosystem.

What Spiders also Don’t Do, Says van der Mark: Crawl Into Your Mouth While You Sleep. “That’s really an urban legend. A spider in your house prefers to hang high in its web, where it can catch prey, and leaves again when it gets warmer outside.”
