Linda de Mol is the school director of Breinstein in the program she devised brilliant brains . The intention was that the presenter would be strict in that role, but she didn’t always get rid of that.
“I found that I had to be strict,” De Mol tells Nu.nl. “I am there to take the exams. But I can’t comfort someone if things go wrong, I just can’t. I can’t say: grab your suitcase. I was already on the floor in the first episode to comfort someone.”
In the program, twelve people who can study exceptionally well against each other compete for the title Brilliant Brain. They sleep together on a campus where they take an exam every day on a specific topic. After each exam, a candidate falls off until there are four left in the final.
De Mol himself came up with this idea after seeing a Netflix show about muscular, fit people. “What would happen if you did something like that with intelligence tests instead of muscle strength, I wondered. From that idea I thought about assignments, candidates and the university appearance. I then presented the format to my brother (Talpa director John de Mol, ed.) And further developed with the creative leadership of Talpa.”

Yet brilliant brains can be seen at RTL 4 and not on a Talpa channel. According to De Mol, everyone at Talpa doubted whether it would fit on SBS6. “That is a feeling and very difficult to explain. But we thought it fits better with RTL.” And there, even though it is a “exciting project”, it was immediately said yes.
“This program is something completely different, not a copy of a copy. The viewer might have to get used to it. It is not an average knowledge quiz with which you can do everything at home and also not a reality series in which everyone fights each other out. Besides that De Mol has come up with the program, she is also involved in every step of development. “Which candidates were chosen, what assignments they do. Briljante Breinen is the first completely new program of De Mol since she temporarily laid her work in 2022 because of her private situation.
Now she wants to talk about her work again. “I hope that the attention can go back to my career after 3.5 years. As I already wrote in my column: it is my choice and everyone can think something about it, but it remains my life. For me there is now a line.”
De Mol wants to focus on the future, with hopefully success for brilliant brains . “For me it was a very nice period and I am proud of what it has become.
