They started as two teenagers in love in a Carry Slee film, now they are in the international crime series Safe Harbor . Martijn Lakemeier (31) and Gaite Jansen (33) further expanded their careers and never lost sight of each other.
Lakemeier and Jansen can be seen from Friday in Safe Harbor , a crime series on Videoland from Ozark -Memorand Mark Williams. Lakemeier plays the lead role as a hacker with a lot of knowledge of the port of Rotterdam that is chartered by a group of Irish drug criminals. He gets help from an old friend, played by Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen. Jansen has an important supporting role as the Dutch rich donor Rika.
“For me this is really something new,” says Lakemeier. “Mark could have made this series in Los Angeles, but he chose Rotterdam. That makes it immediately feel familiar. Gaite and I both grew up in Rotterdam.”
“It is relatively new that the Netherlands is participating in the international market,” says Jansen. “You don’t experience such a big collaboration often. Mark is also not afraid of coming up with big things. In the Netherlands there might have been saved on an expensive car, but here it is really larger than life.”
International productions are no longer stranger to the two actors. Lakemeier previously filmed in Paris for the BBC series Marie Antoinette and is working on the second season of the Biographical series Máxima . Jansen lived in New York for a while and has just completed recordings of the German criminal series Tatort . Have they outgrown the Netherlands?
“Very cool things are made in many places,” says the actress. “With abroad you simply have a larger playing field. I just come back from Germany and is now sitting here again. It is always shifting a bit, I am where the work is. But the Netherlands is also full of interesting makers, so they can certainly keep calling me.”
“I think I also run a bit behind my work,” says Lakemeier. “That is also the cool one, all those different places. I don’t know what my year will look like and where it will take place. At the moment I really can’t complain, but I also know that this work has no future guarantees. I have also made a kind of plan B, as a snowboard teacher, for example. But acting just keeps me challenging and intriguing.”
Jansen and Lakemeier previously played in the youth film Lover of Loser , the historic drama Sonny Boy , the crime series Hollands Hoop , the short film Skógafoss and the romantic comedy Happy Ending . With Safe Harbor, the counter is now on six.
“We try to make it as little as possible,” says Lakemeier laughing. “So that it can continue for as long as possible.” Jansen: “It is good that we don’t play a couple in Safe Harbor . I am really a sidelines in the story now.”
The actress thinks back to her debut as a sixteen -year -old in Lover or Loser . “We were really small then.” She looks at Lakemeier for a moment, who was fifteen at the time. “We also went film cushion at the time? I remember so well. That we collided with each other’s teeth. All of those very sweet children’s things. That is so nice to look back on. We also did not know that our lives would be so intertwined. And that we would become such good friends.”
Jansen sees that continues for years. “It seems so cool as we play later in seventies who go on vacation to Spain or something. That you experience a whole life in real life and in fiction.” Lakemeier attracts a broad grin: “Where can I draw?”
