Danny Noppert convincingly reached the round of 16 of the World Matchplay on Saturday. The Frisian was too strong for the Scot Cameron Menzies with 10-2 in Blackpool, England.
The 34-year-old Noppert got off to an excellent start. The world number sixteen was quickly 5-0 up after, among other things, a finish of 104. Menzies then took two legs, but Noppert was never in trouble.
In the round of 16, Noppert may face his compatriot Gian van Veen. ‘The Giant’ must stun title holder Luke Humphries later in the evening to do so.
Wessel Nijman will also be in action on Saturday evening. The Dutchman will face Nathan Aspinall.
In total, seven Dutch players are participating in the World Matchplay. Dirk van Duijvenbode and Jermaine Wattimena will appear on the oche on Sunday. On Monday, the cracker between Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld is on the program.
Van Gerwen has won the World Matchplay three times. The Brabander triumphed for the last time in 2022. Last year he lost in the final to Humphries.
