Niels Laros is through it after missing out a medal in the final of the 1,500 meters at the World Athletics World Cup. The twenty -year -old Dutchman even thought he could win gold in Tokyo, but it was a fifth place.
“I am so disappointed here, because I really believed in it. Every step towards Tokyo was perfect. And the series and the semi -final here too,” Laros said on Wednesday half an hour after the final battle in the Japan National Stadium.
De Brabander could have become the youngest Dutch world champion ever, and the youngest medal winner ever in the 1,500 meters worldwide. After two victories last month in the Diamond League, he was even seen by the international press as one of the greatest contenders for gold.
“I also stood on the starting line with the idea: I can get gold here. I went for that. It is very sour if you then become fifth.”
Immediately after the finish, Laros was completely through it. He sought support with his training buddy Stefan Nillessen in the stands and was exhausted on a bench. “I feel good physically,” he explained. “It was the disappointment.”
With a fifth place, Laros ran the best global final in his early career. In 2023 he finished tenth in the World Cup final in Budapest and last year at the Paris Olympic Games he finished sixth.
Yet Laros does not want to value his fifth place. Extra painful was that he had not done much wrong. He ran almost the entire race from the front, but he could not accelerate on the last straight. That way the competition could pass him. The Portuguese Isaac further grabbed gold in 3.34.10 and Laros clocked 3.34.52. He was short of 0.27 seconds for a medal.
“I performed the race well: I was in a position to win,” Laros analyzed. “But in the last 80 meters it went wrong. I didn’t have the legs. If I had done something wrong, I could blame myself. Then I had a cause. Not now. I just missed speed on the last part.”
Possibly the World Cup is not yet over for Laros, who has also qualified for the 5,000 meters. The question is whether he will start at that distance, after the deception on his best part, the 1,500 meters.
“I have no idea what to do. I will first recover and then consult with the team. And then we make a decision about the 5,000 meters.”
