Neymar takes stupid red card in possibly his last game for Santos

Neymar received a red card on Sunday in what may have been his last match for Santos. The forward received a second yellow card for a deliberate handball against Botafogo (0-1 loss).

Neymar scored fifteen minutes before the end of the match by tapping the ball in with his hand. The referee disallowed the goal and gave the star his second yellow card. Neymar had already received a yellow card in the first half for a foul.

In the final phase, Botafogo took advantage of the numerical advantage thanks to a goal from Artur. Due to the defeat, Santos remains in the relegation zone of the Brazilian competition. The club from São Paulo is eighteenth and has only eight points from eleven matches.

For Neymar, it was possibly his last match in his second period at Santos. The 33-year-old forward is suspended for the match against Fortaleza on June 13. That is Santos’ last match before a break is taken due to the Club World Cup.

Neymar’s contract expires at the end of June. Neymar’s father and agent recently emphasized that his son is in demand. “We have not yet spoken with Santos about a contract extension,” said Neymar senior. “A new contract depends on several factors.”

Memphis Depay played eighty minutes in Corinthians’ goalless draw against Vitória. The 31-year-old forward can now prepare for the Orange’s World Cup qualifying matches against Finland (June 7) and Malta (June 10).
