The Northern Lights might be visible again over the Netherlands on the night of Sunday to Monday. A large solar flare occurred towards Earth on Saturday. The weather conditions are favorable.
In a solar flare, an explosion occurs on the surface of the sun. This releases a huge amount of charged particles into space. When these collide with the Earth’s magnetic field and enter our atmosphere, the Northern Lights can occur.
The solar flare from Saturday was directed towards Earth. Aside from the possible Northern Lights, it will not have major consequences here, says Weerplaza meteorologist Raymond Klaassen. “Very locally, perhaps some disruptions in radio communication, but that happens more often.”
Klaassen expects the Northern Lights to be visible in the Netherlands. “It always remains a question, but with the clear skies that will occur tonight and tomorrow night, there is a good chance that the Northern Lights will be visible here with the naked eye.”
Especially in dark places in the country, such as the Wadden Islands and the Veluwe, there is a good chance that the Northern Lights will be visible. “Actually, it is already happening, because those particles have already reached the Earth. We just don’t see it now because it is daytime,” says Klaassen.
