Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli steps up after the fatal demonstrations in Kathmandu against the ban on social media. On Tuesday, the Nepalese government already withdrew the ban. Three ministers had already resigned because of the protests.
A statement signed by Prime Minister Oli states that with his resignation “steps can be taken towards a political solution and a solution of the problems”.
The Nepalese government decided last Friday 26 to ban social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube. The prohibition was withdrawn on Monday evening.
During the demonstrations, the police opened fire on the crowd. In addition, nineteen people died and hundreds were injured.
On Tuesday, angry Nepalese took to the streets again and they damaged, among other things, offices of political parties. A few hours earlier, the government had lifted the ban on social media.
The airport of Kathmandu stopped the domestic flights earlier on Tuesday. The airport is now completely closed.
