
Jesper de Jong lost the first Davis Cup party of Tomás Martín Etcheverry in Groningen on Friday. The Argentinian was too strong for the Dutchman in two sets: 4-6 and 4-6.
De Jong made his Davis Cup debut in a sold-out Martiniplaza. The number 79 in the world could not give the Netherlands the desired start.
In the first set, De Jong handed in his service early. He came back strongly with a Lovegame on the Etcheverry storage in the sixth game, but immediately lost his service again. The Argentinian then no longer handed over the set.
The 25-year-old De Jong seemed to be recovered in the second set. He was a 2-0 lead, but the Noord-Hollander could not hold the level and lost its storage twice in a row. De Jong brushed away several match points, but had to give in tennis after more than two hours.
“I feel he was really better,” De Jong said to Ziggo Sport after the game. “That hurts a lot. I also notice that losing for your country hurts a little more. But I have played a good game and show what I can do.”
Botic van de Zandschulp later on Friday plays the second game against Francisco Cerúndolo. On Saturday, a doubles and two single games are on the program. The winner of the meeting qualifies for the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy in November. Last year Oranje lost the final of Italy.
