National coach Julian Nagelsmann was not satisfied with the deployment at Germany on Thursday after the 2-0 defeat in Slovakia. The team lost an away game in the World Cup qualification for the first time in history.
Former Feyenoorder Dávid Hancko gave Slovakia ahead just before the break. In the second half, David Strelec provided the final chord. It is the first time that Germany has started a World Cup qualifying cycle with a defeat.
“It starts with the simple things, such as showing passion,” the 38-year-old Nagelsmann started against Ard afterwards. “Mentally, the opponent was miles in front of us. And in a footballing sense, Slovakia was also better.”
“We are not in the position of playing at 80 percent here. That is impossible. If we can’t afford it mentally to give everything, we can close the book. Quality does not matter.”

The coach believes that Germany should approach every match as if it were the semi -final of the Champions League. “Otherwise we will play in the play-offs in March. Everyone must now realize that we have to go full bowl.”
Germany will play a home game against Northern Ireland on Sunday. The remaining four group competitions are on the program in October and November. Only the group winner qualifies directly for next year’s World Cup. The number two goes to the play-offs.
