The majority of the money raised by the collaborating aid organizations through Giro555 for victims of the war in Ukraine has been spent on livelihood assistance. A significant portion also went to food, protection, shelter, and care.
Giro555 published the final report on the fundraising campaign on Tuesday. It ran from the spring of 2022 to April 2023 and raised a total of over 184 million euros. With this, organizations such as Cordaid, the Red Cross, Oxfam Novib, UNICEF, and Doctors of the World have provided assistance to victims of the war in recent years.
Of the money, organizations spent approximately 53 million euros on support to help people who lost their homes and jobs due to the war to continue to make a living. This assistance consisted of money as well as things like tools, seeds, vehicles, and help in starting businesses.
The majority of the money was spent in Ukraine itself, but the organizations also helped people who fled to countries like Poland and Romania. This also included assistance with, for example, learning the language, legal aid, and childcare.
The money from the Giro555 campaign has now been used up, but aid organizations continue to raise funds separately to continue providing support. The fundraising for Ukraine raised the second-highest amount for a Giro555 campaign ever. Only for victims of the tsunami in Asia in 2004 did people give more, namely over 208 million euros.
