Mo-Ajok rushes to victory at 200 meters at European Championships for country teams, Klaver Vierde

Xavi Mo-Ajok won the 200 meters at the European Team Championships in Madrid on Sunday. In the women’s event, Lieke Klaver finished fourth in this discipline. With a few events to go, the Netherlands is fourth in the standings.

The 22-year-old Mo-Ajok sprinted to a winning time of 20.01 seconds. He was two-tenths of a second above Churandy Martina’s Dutch record from 2016. Mo-Ajok was seventeen hundredths of a second ahead of Italian Fausto Desalut.

Earlier in the evening, the 26-year-old Klaver sped to 22.59. The Dutchwoman was four-tenths of a second slower than the Spanish winner, Jaël Bestué. The Frenchwoman Hélène Parisot (22.42) and the German Sophia Junk (22.53) were also faster than Klaver.

In the standings, the Netherlands is fourth with 299.5 points after 29 of the 37 events. Poland is third with 303.5 points. Italy is firmly in the lead with 343 points, and Germany is second with 305 points.

On the final day of the European Championships on Sunday, the program mainly consists of running events. In addition to Klaver and Mo-Ajok, Maureen Koster (1,500 meters), Stefan Nillessen (1,500 meters), and Niels Laros (5,000 meters), among others, will be in action.

The 4×400 meter mixed relay is the closing event of the tournament. Femke Bol, who won the 400 meters on Friday, has already announced that she will not participate in the final event. The European Team Championships have been held since 2009. The Netherlands has never won the tournament.
