Misunderstanding around the Donk's reserve at Oranje: 'really could not start'

Andries Jonker disputes that Daniƫlle van de Donk could have started in the European Championship match against England on Wednesday. The 33-year-old midfielder made that statement after the match to the NOS.

Van de Donk started on the bench in the European Championship cracker against England, which Oranje lost 4-0. Jonker explained that the experienced midfielder was physically unable to play from the start.

But afterwards, Van de Donk told the NOS that she felt good enough for a starting place. “I felt good this morning, but the decision was already made last night,” said Van de Donk. “Then it stops. I felt good enough to start.”

Jonker was confronted with Van de Donk’s words at the press conference afterwards and stated that it was different.

“I think there is a misunderstanding. It was very clear that she could not start and could play a maximum of 20 to 25 minutes. That was discussed with Daan and the doctor.”

Van de Donk later softens words

Later in the mixed zone, Van de Donk softened her words. She told NU.nl, among others, that she was not yet able to play on the evening before the match.

“We looked at my recovery day by day. I felt good this morning, but the chance of getting injured was greater. I understand the choice that I would not start.”

“Of course that is super annoying. You want to play these kinds of matches. This is the stage to shine on. Then it is very disappointing if you cannot help the team.”
