In the Spanish city of Torre Pacheco, antimigrant riots have broken out in recent days after the mistreatment of a 68-year-old man. There are tensions between locals, extreme right -wing groups and migrants.
The 68-year-old man was attacked last week by a group of young men he did not recognize, but who, according to the victim of North African descent, are. The incident is still being investigated.
Two arrests were made in connection with the abuse. Both detainees are of North African descent, but were not involved in the abuse itself.
According to local media, two “very violent” groups are involved in the riots: the extremist groups that call for a “yacht” on migrants in the city and the migrants themselves. During the riots, among other things, bottles and stones were thrown and at least five people were slightly injured.

About a third of the inhabitants of Torre Pacheco are a migrant, a large part of which is second generation. Many of them work in agriculture, one of the important pillars of the economy in the region.
The violence is partly fueled by calls on social media, with xenophobic and racist messages. Extreme right -wing groups and the Ultrarchy party Vox called for protest and mass portation of migrants with the slogan “defend yourself against insecurity” in response to the mistreatment of the man.
Local and national politicians call for calmness and appeal to citizens to avoid fake news. A spokesperson for the Regional Parliament speaks of a “racist witch hunt” in the city. “Neonazi groups and Vox use the attack on an older man to encourage violence against the foreign population.”
Local Moroccan organizations are delivered and insist on extra protection for migrants. Several people have chosen to stay in their homes for fear of violence. The police are still investigating the riots.
