Million investment to prepare car builder VDL for drone production

VDL

Industrial group VDL and the province of Limburg are planning an investment of 25 million euros in a production location in Born. VDL previously built cars for BMW. Now the company wants to give the site a “broad interpretation”, including making drones for the defense industry.

In addition to drone production, the industrial group also looks at the development of sustainable transport, battery and energy systems and the manufacturing industry. The factory site is being converted for those developments. The company and the province agreed in a letter of intent that VDL will invest 10 million euros and Limburg 15 million euros.

The province had already reserved that amount for an old program budget for VDL Nedcar, which hoped to expand in 2020. The advice is to use the money for the new plan. Of the amount, 5 million euros can be used for extra nature and the quality of life in the environment around the factory site.

The Provincial Executive of Limburg still needs to be approved by the Provincial States to reserve the money for the development of the factory site.

“We are talking to the province about what these millions will be invested in,” says Willem van der Leegte, president of VDL. “The starting point is the stimulation of innovation, employment and quality of life on the VDL site in Born and in the area.”

Earlier, VDL entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Defense to allow defense companies in the building. They must build military drones and vehicles in the future. VDL also continues to build vehicles such as electric buses, just like parts such as battery packages.
