Lionel Messi has once again made history with Inter Miami on Saturday night (Dutch time). The Argentinian scored twice against Nashville SC, thus improving his own record in the MLS.
Earlier this week, Messi became the first player in MLS history to score two goals in four consecutive matches. In the 2-1 victory against Nashville SC, the former FC Barcelona player was once again on form.
The 38-year-old Messi opened the scoring for his home crowd after about fifteen minutes with a placed free kick low in the corner. It was the 69th goal of his career from a direct free kick.
After halftime, Nashville came back to 1-1, but Messi stood up again. He was able to take advantage of fumbling by keeper Joe Willis, who played the ball right into his feet. Messi then rounded the goalkeeper and calmly shot in.
With sixteen goals, Messi is now joint top scorer in the MLS. He leads the list with Sam Surridge of Nashville. Messi has played six fewer games with Inter Miami than Surridge.
Inter Miami is in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Last season, the club finished at the top of the regular competition, but Messi and his teammates were surprisingly eliminated in the first round of the play-offs.
