Olympique Marseille was frustrated on Tuesday after the 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League. The French club is mainly angry about the second penalty kick after a handball from Facundo Medina in a duel with Vinícius Júnior.
Real and Marseille were on the same level ten minutes before time due to goals from Timothy Weah and Kylian Mbappé (penalty). In the 81st minute, Medina made a sliding in the penalty area, with his arm touching the ball.
Referee Irfan Peljto awarded a penalty kick, allowing Mbappé to score again. Marseille trainer Roberto de Zerbi was not pleased with the performance of the arbitration afterwards.
“An incredible penalty. This was absolutely not a penalty,” the coach told CBS Sports, among others. “At Real, a lot of pressure is always put on the arbitration prior to the competition. Maybe that has had an influence.”
“I find it a bit embarrassing,” the Zerbi continued. “I would have said this if a penalty kick was granted to our advantage in a similar situation.”
The Zerbi also suggested that the decision of the arbitration was possible to compensate for the red card by Real captain Dani Carvajal. The defender had to leave twenty minutes before time after a headbump at the address of Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli.
Real trainer Xabi Alonso was happy with the narrow victory, but less satisfied with the Carvajal campaign. “It’s a shame, because the red card could be avoided. We will discuss this internally.”
Alonso was especially satisfied with Real’s first half hour. “We played fantastic. We quickly conquered the ball and created opportunities. We should have scored more often. In the second half it went less, among other things because of the red card. But we kept showing fighting spirit.”
