French President Emmanuel Macron asked outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on Monday to make a final attempt to save his cabinet. He gets time until Wednesday evening. Earlier in the day, Lecornu unexpectedly announced his departure.
Macron hopes that Lecornu will still find a way out of the political crisis on the last minute. In a written statement, the president is talking about “final negotiations with a view to stability for the country”. For that, the prime minister, who suddenly had announced his departure, is given 48 hours.
Lecornu has announced that he is accepting the assignment. “I will let Macron know on Wednesday evening if something is possible or not, so that he can draw the right conclusions,” he said. The President’s statement and Lecornu’s answer followed after a meeting between the two Monday evening.
Lecornu announced that it would step after less than a month in office. Only on Sunday evening had the Prime Minister announced the ministerial posts of his cabinet. That led to a lot of criticism, and opposition parties threatened with a motion of no confidence. Lecornu said he could no longer continue because of the division in parliament.
His possible departure pushes France even further into a political crisis. Lecornu is the fifth prime minister in two years. Before him, Michel Barnier and François Bayrou, among others, were voted out as prime minister for their cutbacks.
Another prime minister, or new elections?
If Lecornu does not make it, it could be that Macron is trying to find another prime minister. It is also possible that he will then write out parliamentary elections. Opposition parties already asked about this immediately after the resignation of Lecornu. In 2024, Macron once proclaimed parliamentary elections in an attempt to put an end to the political impasse, but that was counterproductive for him.
Some politicians believe that Macron should leave himself. Macron’s mandate is still running until May 2027. He has already announced that he would not have been going to leave earlier.
