In July 2026, the new Dutch truck toll will take effect. This will make driving with diesel approximately 7.5 percent more expensive, according to calculations by ING Research. Electric trucks will be significantly favored with an 80 percent discount on the toll.
From 2027, driving with diesel will become even more expensive due to a second European toll on trucks. This will cause transport costs for diesel trucks to increase by about 10 percent over the next two years.
As a result, driving electrically will become increasingly financially attractive, and the number of e-trucks in the Netherlands will increase, according to researchers at ING: from about 1,500 e-trucks in 2025 to almost 25,000 in 2030.
However, there are still limitations. The limited grid capacity and insufficient charging stations still pose an obstacle for electric trucks.
In addition, the replacement of older trucks is slow. Because older vehicles drive fewer kilometers and the vehicle tax decreases, the financial incentive to replace them remains limited.
