1′ Kick-off! The Swiss referee Sandro Schärer has whistled for the first time, we have started in Munich.
Portugal is dangerous for the first time via Pedro Neto. Controller Zubimendi has to go all the way to his own back line. From the subsequent corner, the ball goes just wide via João Neves.
That could be a dangerous free kick. Yamal regains the ball on Nuno Mendes and is tripped by Bruno Fernandes just outside the penalty area.
This should have been 1-0 for Spain! Nico Williams goes deep, receives the ball perfectly from Huijsen and keeps the overview. But Pedri shoots it wide.
Spain is really dictating the game now. Williams dribbles dangerously inside and looks for the far corner, but his shot goes half a meter over.
The first yellow card is for the Portuguese. And for Inácio, who leaves his elbow hanging in a header duel with Oyarzabal.
21′ GOAL Spain! 0-1
That certainly wasn’t out of the blue. Lamine Yamal curls the ball into the penalty area from the right, Portugal can’t clear the ball. Martín Zubimendi gives the final push.
26′ GOAL Portugal! 1-1
Portugal gasped for breath, but then suddenly the equalizer falls. The left back scores it. Nuno Mendes sneaks forward, receives the ball from Neto and slides it hard into the far corner.
Spain picks up the thread again, the lightning-fast Nico Williams is a plague for the Portuguese defenders. Now he bypasses the offside trap, but he doesn’t get past goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Fabián Ruiz is the first Spaniard to receive a yellow card, after a foul on Neto.
The Spanish storm has subsided somewhat. Portugal threatened to be overrun for a moment, but after Mendes’ 1-1 they have regained some grip on the match.
Referee Schärer allows a lot. Now he does whistle for a strong tackle by Oyarzabal on João Neves, but the cards remain in his pocket.
45′ GOAL Spain! 1-2
Consternation among the Portuguese, because Schärer lets play continue after an alleged foul on Bernardo Silva. And ultimately Mikel Oyarzabal benefits, who slides the ball past Diogo Costa after a nice through ball from Pedri.
45+2′ Half-time! This first half has flown by. Over 45 minutes, Spain’s lead is deserved, although the Portuguese will complain about the moment with Bernardo Silva in the lead-up to the 1-2.
46′ Kick-off! We have started again. Will it be two in a row for Spain? Or the second Nations League win for Portugal, after the won final against Oranje in 2019?
Bruno Fernandes thinks he shoots Portugal to 2-2, but the goal is (rightly) disallowed for offside!
Now it is Portugal that has the initiative. A very different picture than before half-time.
Still an attack from Spain. Fabián Ruiz shoots from a great distance, Diogo Costa has to take action.
61′ GOAL Portugal! 2-2
There is the moment of Cristiano Ronaldo! While Nuno Mendes surprises the defending Yamal, Ronaldo chooses position. The cross from Mendes is deflected, Ronaldo pushes Cucurella aside and taps in the 2-2. No foul according to the arbitration, it is 2-2. And that is deserved according to the game image in the second half.
Now standout Nuno Mendes has to defend again! And he does that with verve. He seems to be made dizzy by Pedri, but still gets his foot against the ball at the last moment.
Now Portugal is being surrounded by Spain again. Williams tries it from distance, but Diogo Costa doesn’t have to take action.
The Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente is waiting remarkably long with his countermove, because he has not yet substituted. Is he saving his reinforcements for extra time?
Compatriot Roberto Martínez does substitute, even twice. Renato Veiga and Rafael Leão for Inácio and Bernardo Silva.
While Portugal is preparing for a corner, goalkeeper Costa sits down on the other side. He has cramps, it seems.
Spain is starting to push again. Lamine Yamal tries it from distance, but the ball goes straight at Diogo Costa.
Also Ronaldo gets tired once, he has to be substituted and gets a standing ovation. Gonçalo Ramos takes his place, Bruno Fernandes gets the captain’s armband.
Spectacular save by Veiga on the line, after a chip from Oyarzabal. But he was offside, so the goal would not have counted anyway.
Yellow for Robin Le Normand, after he puts the rushing Rafael Leão over his knee.
We get two minutes extra. And probably thirty more after that.
There Spain gets away well! Simón wants to punch away a free kick from Fernandes, the ball bounces over the back line via a Portuguese leg.
90+2′ End signal!
Ronaldo already had to stop the fight after his 2-2. But the rest goes happily on: we need extra time to determine the winner of this Nations League edition.
90′ Kick-off! Portugal and Spain will extend twice fifteen minutes. And maybe also take penalties.
What a chance for Portugal! Nuno Mendes thunders over it again on the left. He puts the ball ready wide on fellow back Semedo, but he shoots wide.
Spain responds with two substitutions: Williams and Mingueza make way for Álex Baena and Pedro Porro.
After sloppy defending from Portugal, Cucurella gets the ball right at his feet. But he hits the ball wrong and shoots harmlessly over.
The flame flares up! Nuno Mendes – who else – goes down in the penalty area after a long rush, but does not get a penalty. And then there are a few Spaniards who are going to get a story.
Open header chance for – there he is again – Mendes. But he heads straight at Simón and is also offside.
The verdict of Schärer: yellow for Mendes and Baena. The VAR is still looking at a possible red card, but is also quickly done with that.
105+1′ Rest! Still 2-2, Portugal has gotten the only big chance via Semedo. That it will result in penalties, is becoming an increasingly realistic scenario.
On the other side the same thing happens: Yamal shoots straight at Costa. We get one minute of injury time.
Lamine Yamal can’t continue at Spain, Yeremy Pino is his replacement.
With Portugal Diogo Jota comes in for Neto.
106′ Kick-off! Another fifteen minutes to prevent it from turning into penalties.
Spectacular! Pedro Porro sees Costa standing far in front of his goal and tries it at the height of the midline. Costa is quite shocked, but ultimately does not have to take action and sees the ball sail just over.
Leão switches to his fifth gear, Porro is running on his heels. Yellow card for the right back, who almost scored from about forty meters.
Oyarzabal didn’t seem quite fresh at the end of the first half, now his match is really over. Routinier Álvaro Morata comes in.
One minute of injury time and then we can start with the penalties.
Big header chance for Diogo Jota yet! But the ball goes over.
120′ End signal!
The backs have stolen the show in extra time. But apart from the chance for Semedo, the distance attempt by Porro and the rush by Mendes, we have seen little. The penalty series is a logical consequence.
GOAL Portugal! 1-0 via Gonçalo Ramos, through the middle.
GOAL Spain! 1-1 by Mikel Merino.
GOAL Portugal! 2-1, neatly shot in the corner by Vitinha.
GOAL Spain! 2-2, after Merino also Álex Baena sends keeper Costa into the wrong corner.
GOAL Portugal! 3-2, penalty specialist Bruno Fernandes also makes no mistake.
GOAL Spain! 3-3 by Isco, but what a little difference… Costa was on it, but the ball still goes in.
GOAL Portugal! 4-3 by the best man of the field, Nuno Mendes. Taking penalties he can also, impeccable in the upper corner.
MISSER Spain! Álvaro Morata stuit on Diogo Costa, Portugal is on matchpoint!
GOAL Portugal! 5-3, Rúben Neves gives Portugal the Nations League. Number two already, after the final against Netherlands in 2019.
It makes a lot loose at the substituted Cristiano Ronaldo, who at the age of forty wins a main prize with his country. He lets his tears run free.
