Groen licht: Q3 is begonnen!
Theoretisch heeft Oscar Piastri de snelste tijd in handen. De WK-leider heeft in alledrie de sectoren de snelste tijd staan, alleen reed die tijden niet in dezelfde ronde. Potentieel kan hij een 1.14,743 rijden. Op de klok staat een 1.14,941. Dat is 0,051 seconde langzamer dan Norris.
Verstappen klokt een 1.15,547, tegenover een 1,14,890 voor Norris. Hij verliest eigenlijk in alle drie de sectoren ongeveer twee tienden op de snelste McLaren.
Door naar Q3:
Laatste minuut: Over de streep. Achtste tijd nu voor Verstappen. Daarmee is hij veilig.
Nog 1 minuut: Verstappen is onderweg in zijn cruciale ronde om Q3 te halen.
Nog 2 minuten: Nu is het menens in deze slotminuten. Leclerc gaat naar de vijde tijd, achter de Aston Martins en de McLarens.
Nog 3 minuten: Het wordt geen perfecte voorbereiding voor Verstappen, die in de file staat om de pits uit te komen.
Nog 5 minuten: Lance Stroll is de enige op de baan en in een snelle ronde. De afkoelende baan wordt duidelijk sneller. Stroll gaat naar een 1.15,129, dat is nu de derde tijd.
Nog 9 minuten: Er is een duidelijke scheiding tussen de tijden, die verklaard kan worden tussen wel of geen nieuwe banden. De McLarens en Aston Martins reden wel op nieuwe banden en staan nu bovenaan. De Ferrari’s en Verstappen niet.
Nog 11 minuten: Verstappen komt niet verder dan een 1.16,0 en staat daarmee zevende. In Q1 reed hij in 1.15,7.
Nog 12 minuten: Er verschijnen al tijden op de klok, al verbetert niemand zich ten opzichte van Q1. Alonso heeft met een 1.15,3 de snelste tijd in handen.
Nu toch melding op wat boordradio’s van wat druppels in bocht 1 en bocht 5, al is het niet echt te zien.
Groen licht: Q2 is begonnen!
Dat Tsunoda niet doorgaat is echt een kwestie van minimale gaten. Verstappen rijdt een 1.15,736, teammaat Tsunoda 1.15,899. Dat is het verschil tussen de elfde en zestiende tijd. Franco Colapinto gaat wel door, en die was maar 0,014 seconde sneller dan de Japanner.
Speciale vermelding voor Isack Hadjar die de derde tijd op de klokken zet in Q1. Fernando Alonso maakt ook indruk met de tweede tijd.
Verstappen is door naar Q2, maar wel slechts met de elfde tijd. Wordt het zelfs spannend voor de Nederlander of hij Q3 wel kan halen?
Q1 is afgelopen: Slecht nieuws voor Yuki Tsunoda, die door zijn voorganger Liam Lawson uit de top 15 wordt gedruk. Ook Gasly, Ocon, Hulkenberg en Albon mogen niet verder.
Laatste minuut: Het gaat weer niet van harte bij Verstappen, die slechts negende is na zijn nieuwe poging.
Nog 2 minuten: Piastri gaat terug naar de top, al is hij maar 0,070 seconde sneller dan Alonso.
Nog 4 minuten: De baan wordt steeds sneller en koelt ook snel af. Dat is te zien aan de Aston Martins, die snel zijn. Fernando Alonso gaat zelfs naar de top met een 1.15,2.
Nog 7 minuten: Bijna iedereen staat nu binnen ter voorbereiding op de tweede runs.
Verstappen staat op de dertiende plek drie plaatsen boven de streep.
Nog 11 minuten: We hebben de eerste runs er opzitten. Het is nog steeds geen goed nieuws bij Red Bull. Verstappen opent met een 1.16,346 en daar zijn nu al acht coureurs onderdoor. Snelste man Piastri is acht tienden sneller dan de regerend wereldkampioen.
Nog 14 minuten: Terwijl Sainz zijn eerste run al in de eerste bocht verprutst met een blokkerend rechter voorwiel, wordt het snel drukker op de baan. De Ferrari’s, de McLarens, de Red Bulls… ze zijn allemaal onderweg.
Nog 16 minuten: Het zijn de Williams-coureurs die als eerste in actie komen. De rest staat nog binnen.
Groen licht: Q1 is begonnen!
Zo ziet dat er uit. Voorlopig ligt het circuit niet in het pad van de buien.
De buien die momenteel op de radar te zien zijn gaan allemaal ten westen en noorden langs het circuit.
Nog 8 minuten voor de kwalificatie gaat beginnen. We hebben te maken met een buitentemperatuur van 29,4 graden. De baan is heet, 52,5 graden Celsius. Er zijn wel wat buien in de omgeving, maar voorlopig zijn die nog niet bij het circuit. De regenkans voor de kwalificatie is 20 procent.
Er was na drie vrije trainingen nog altijd veel stof tot napraten bij Red Bull. Verstappen worstelt met de Hungaring in de RB21, die kampt met onderstuur én de achterbanden te veel lijkt te belasten. Verstappen was verre van tevreden. De McLarens zitten er heel ver voor, de Ferrari’s ogenschijnlijk ook.
Poeh, dat was wederom een zware sessie voor Verstappen en Red Bull. Yuki Tsunoda is zelfs negentiende. Er is nu nog een paar uur om aan de afstelling te werken, en dat is nodig ook.
Vlag is uit: Geen verbeteringen meer bij Verstappen, die de training afsluit als twaalfde. De snelste tijd is voor Piastri, voor Norris, Leclerc, Hamilton en Antonelli.
Nog 2 minuten: Verstappen is de baan weer op, met de banden waarop hij één snelle run heeft gedaan. Ook de Ferrari’s zijn nog op het asfalt. Lijkt er niet op dat iemand nog een run gaat doen op nieuw rubber.
Nog 3 minuten: Verstappen zit nog in de auto, dus gaat waarschijnlijk nog wel een run doen.
Nog 7 minuten: Het commentaar van Verstappen duidt er op dat ze flink aan het experimenteren zijn met de afstelling. Dus de twaalde tijd voor de Nederlander is waarschijnlijk niet echt representatief. Toch heeft het er alle schijn van dat Red Bull al blij mag zijn als het Ferrari kan aanvallen. De McLarens zitten daar duidelijk nog voor.
Nog 10 minuten: Een flink momentje voor Isack Hadjar, die in de laatste bocht van de baan spint. Hij kan wel door.
Nog 11 minuten: Leclerc komt op drie tienden van Piastri en pakt de derde tijd.
Nog 12 minuten: Geen goed nieuws uit de Red Bull van Verstappen. Poeh, hij komt niet dichterbij dan 1,2 seconde van Piastri. Dat was geen vlekkeloze ronde. ‘Je probeert de achterbanden te sparen en dan krijg je bakken onderstuur, godverdorie’, moppert Verstappen.
Nog 14 minuten: Norris komt heel dicht in de buurt van Piastri en moet uiteindelijk 0,032 toegeven op zijn teammaat.
Nog 15 minuten: Ook Verstappen is met nieuwe softs op pad. Hamilton komt met drie tienden dichterbij aan Piastri, maar heeft een slechte derde sector.
Nog 16 minuten: Piastri heeft een nieuwe tijd op de klokken, en die is vrij rap. De WK-leider duikt voor het eerst in de 1.14,916 en is daarmee een seconde sneller dan wie dan ook.
Nog 25 minuten: Verstappen heeft nog steeds last van onderstuur, zegt hij. Norris doet nog een ronde op de softs en komt daarmee naar de derde tijd, waarmee hij nog altijd twee tienden langzamer is dan zijn teamgenoot.
Nog 28 minuten: Piastri heeft zich inmiddels bovenaan de tijdenlijst genesteld, met een 1.15,871. Lewis Hamilton is de tweede, met een tijd die daar een tiende boven zit. Leclerc heeft nu de derde tijd, maar kan echt beter. De Ferrari-coureur was in de eerste sector drie tienden dan wie dan ook, maar verloor dat met zijn fout in de slotsector. Lando Norris heeft de vijfde tijd en staat daarmee dus nog onder Verstappen. Het is wachten tot de Brit zich laat zien. Vrijdag was hij continu de snelsgte. Het goede nieuws voor Verstappen is dat hij vooraan ‘in de mix’ zit.
Nog 32 minuten: Terwijl Hamilton te diep gaat in de eerste bocht en zijn poging afbreekt, gaat Leclerc wel sneller. De Ferrari-coureur gaat naar de snelste tijd, al is hij 0,06 seconde sneller dan Verstappen. Dat was wel inclusief een fout in de derde sector, dus er zit voor Leclerc zeker meer in.
Nog 34 minuten: Verstappen zet een stapje met zijn tweede poging en zet de snelste tijd neer. Hij is 0,038 seconde sneller dan Piastri.
Nog 36 minuten: Daar zijn de McLarens met hun eerste runs op de softs. Piastri gaat naar de top, met een tijd die slechts een krappe tiende sneller is dan die van Russell. Norris heeft geen goede ronde en is ook langzamer dan Verstappen. Daar zit ongetwijfeld nog meer in het valt. Verstappen is dus 3 tienden langzamer dan de 1.16,240 van Piastri op dit moment. Daar zitten Russell en Leclerc nog tussen.
“De balans is iets beter, maar nog lang niet goed genoeg”, zegt Verstappen over de boordradio.
Nog 38 minuten: Andere coureurs rijden ook hun snelle tijden. Russelll en Leclerc zijn respectievelijk twee en een tienden sneller dan Verstappen. De McLarens komen er zo aan.
Nog 40 minuten: Verstappen opent op de softs met een 1.16,547. Hij is daarmee vier tienden sneller dan Tsunoda, die dat wel op de mediums reed.
Nog 42 minuten: Het is nu drukker op de baan, met ook Hamilton, Norris en Alonso onder andere onderweg.
Nog 43 minuten: We hebben een nieuwe snelste tijd, van Yuki Tsunoda. De Japanner klokt een 1.17,022 op de mediums. Verstappen is ook onderweg, op de softs.
Nog 47 minuten: Verstappen is inmiddels in zijn Red Bull gesnoerd en gaat zo de baan op.
Nog 51 minuten: We zouden natuurlijk kunnen beweren dat het een enerverende aangelegenheid is op de Hungaroring, maar iedereen staat binnen. Althans, bijna iedereen. Alleen Franco Colapinto is in actie en rijdt dus paarse snelle tijden. Daar mag de Argentijn even van genieten.
Nog 58 minuten: Het is niet druk op de baan, zoals gebruikelijk in de derde vrije training. Wel zijn de McLarens al de baan op, met de harde banden op de auto.
Groen licht: We zijn begonnen!
Verstappen gaat vooral opzoek naar herstel na zijn ronduit slechte vrijdag. De kans is wel groot dat andere (betere) motorstanden nog wat verschil gaan maken. Red Bull staat er om bekend hier op vrijdag vrij conservatief mee te zijn. Zeker met de grote vleugels op de auto in de Hungaroring maakt dat veel verschil.
We gaan beginnen in Hongarije, met een buitentemperatuur van 26,2 graden en een baantemperatuur van 47,3 graden.
Green light: Q3 has started!
Theoretically, Oscar Piastri has the fastest time in hand. The World Championship leader has the fastest time in all three sectors, but he did not drive those times in the same lap. Potentially, he can drive a 1.14.743. The clock shows 1.14.941. That’s 0.051 seconds slower than Norris.
Verstappen clocks a 1.15.547, compared to a 1.14.890 for Norris. He actually loses about two tenths in all three sectors to the fastest McLaren.
Through to Q3:
Last minute: Over the line. Eighth time now for Verstappen. That makes him safe.
1 minute left: Verstappen is on his way in his crucial lap to reach Q3.
2 minutes left: Now it’s serious in these final minutes. Leclerc goes to fifth place, behind the Aston Martins and the McLarens.
3 minutes left: It will not be a perfect preparation for Verstappen, who is in traffic to get out of the pits.
5 minutes left: Lance Stroll is the only one on the track and on a fast lap. The cooling track is clearly getting faster. Stroll goes to a 1.15.129, which is now the third time.
9 minutes left: There is a clear separation between the times, which can be explained between whether or not new tires are used. The McLarens and Aston Martins were on new tires and are now at the top. The Ferraris and Verstappen are not.
11 minutes left: Verstappen does not get further than a 1.16.0 and is thus seventh. In Q1 he drove in 1.15.7.
12 minutes left: Times are already appearing on the clock, although no one is improving on Q1. Alonso has the fastest time in hand with a 1.15.3.
Now there is still a mention on some on-board radios of some drops in turn 1 and turn 5, although it is not really visible.
Green light: Q2 has started!
That Tsunoda does not continue is really a matter of minimal gaps. Verstappen drives a 1.15.736, teammate Tsunoda 1.15.899. That is the difference between eleventh and sixteenth time. Franco Colapinto does go through, and he was only 0.014 seconds faster than the Japanese.
Special mention for Isack Hadjar who sets the third time on the clocks in Q1. Fernando Alonso also impresses with the second time.
Verstappen has advanced to Q2, but only with the eleventh time. Will it even be exciting for the Dutchman whether he can reach Q3?
Q1 is over: Bad news for Yuki Tsunoda, who is pushed out of the top 15 by his predecessor Liam Lawson. Gasly, Ocon, Hulkenberg and Albon are also not allowed to continue.
Last minute: It’s not going smoothly again for Verstappen, who is only ninth after his new attempt.
2 minutes left: Piastri goes back to the top, although he is only 0.070 seconds faster than Alonso.
4 minutes left: The track is getting faster and also cooling down quickly. This can be seen with the Aston Martins, which are fast. Fernando Alonso even goes to the top with a 1.15.2.
7 minutes left: Almost everyone is now inside preparing for the second runs.
Verstappen is in thirteenth place three places above the line.
11 minutes left: We have completed the first runs. It is still not good news at Red Bull. Verstappen opens with a 1.16.346 and there are already eight drivers below that. Fastest man Piastri is eight tenths faster than the reigning world champion.
14 minutes left: While Sainz spoils his first run in the first corner with a blocking right front wheel, it is quickly getting busier on the track. The Ferraris, the McLarens, the Red Bulls… they are all on their way.
16 minutes left: It is the Williams drivers who are the first to take action. The rest are still inside.
Green light: Q1 has started!
That’s what it looks like. For the time being, the circuit is not in the path of the showers.
The showers that are currently visible on the radar are all going west and north along the circuit.
8 minutes before qualifying starts. We are dealing with an outside temperature of 29.4 degrees. The track is hot, 52.5 degrees Celsius. There are some showers in the area, but for the time being they are not yet at the circuit. The chance of rain for qualifying is 20 percent.
After three free practice sessions, there was still much to discuss at Red Bull. Verstappen is struggling with the Hungaring in the RB21, which is struggling with understeer and seems to put too much strain on the rear tires. Verstappen was far from satisfied. The McLarens are far ahead, the Ferraris apparently too.
Phew, that was another tough session for Verstappen and Red Bull. Yuki Tsunoda is even nineteenth. There are still a few hours to work on the setup, and that is necessary too.
Flag is out: No more improvements at Verstappen, who finishes the training as twelfth. The fastest time is for Piastri, for Norris, Leclerc, Hamilton and Antonelli.
2 minutes left: Verstappen is back on the track, with the tires on which he did one fast run. The Ferraris are also still on the asphalt. It doesn’t seem like anyone is going to do another run on new rubber.
3 minutes left: Verstappen is still in the car, so he will probably do another run.
7 minutes left: Verstappen’s comments indicate that they are experimenting considerably with the setup. So the twelfth time for the Dutchman is probably not really representative. Nevertheless, it seems that Red Bull can be happy if it can attack Ferrari. The McLarens are clearly still ahead of that.
10 minutes left: A big moment for Isack Hadjar, who spins off the track in the last corner. He can continue.
11 minutes left: Leclerc is three tenths of Piastri and takes third place.
12 minutes left: No good news from Verstappen’s Red Bull. Phew, he doesn’t get closer than 1.2 seconds to Piastri. That was not a flawless lap. ‘You try to save the rear tires and then you get buckets of understeer, damn it,’ grumbles Verstappen.
14 minutes left: Norris comes very close to Piastri and ultimately has to give up 0.032 to his teammate.
15 minutes left: Verstappen is also on the road with new softs. Hamilton gets three tenths closer to Piastri, but has a bad third sector.
16 minutes left: Piastri has a new time on the clocks, and it’s pretty fast. The World Championship leader dives into the 1.14.916 for the first time and is therefore a second faster than anyone else.
25 minutes left: Verstappen is still suffering from understeer, he says. Norris does another lap on the softs and comes to the third time, which is still two tenths slower than his teammate.
28 minutes left: Piastri has now settled at the top of the times list, with a 1.15.871. Lewis Hamilton is second, with a time that is a tenth above that. Leclerc now has the third time, but can really do better. The Ferrari driver was three tenths better than anyone else in the first sector, but lost that with his mistake in the final sector. Lando Norris has the fifth time and is therefore still below Verstappen. It is waiting for the Brit to show himself. He was constantly the fastest on Friday. The good news for Verstappen is that he is at the front ‘in the mix’.
32 minutes left: While Hamilton goes too deep in the first corner and aborts his attempt, Leclerc goes faster. The Ferrari driver goes to the fastest time, although he is 0.06 seconds faster than Verstappen. That did include a mistake in the third sector, so there is certainly more in it for Leclerc.
34 minutes left: Verstappen takes a step with his second attempt and sets the fastest time. He is 0.038 seconds faster than Piastri.
36 minutes left: There are the McLarens with their first runs on the softs. Piastri goes to the top, with a time that is only a narrow tenth faster than that of Russell. Norris does not have a good lap and is also slower than Verstappen. There is undoubtedly more in it. Verstappen is therefore 3 tenths slower than Piastri’s 1.16.240 at the moment. Russell and Leclerc are still in between.

38 minutes left: Other drivers are also driving their fast times. Russell and Leclerc are two and one tenths faster than Verstappen, respectively. The McLarens are coming soon.
40 minutes left: Verstappen opens on the softs with a 1.16.547. He is therefore four tenths faster than Tsunoda, who did drive that on the mediums.
42 minutes left: It is now busier on the track, with Hamilton, Norris and Alonso, among others, on their way.
43 minutes left: We have a new fastest time, from Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese clocks a 1.17.022 on the mediums. Verstappen is also on his way, on the softs.
47 minutes left: Verstappen is now strapped into his Red Bull and will be on the track soon.
51 minutes left: We could of course argue that it is an exciting affair at the Hungaroring, but everyone is inside. At least, almost everyone. Only Franco Colapinto is in action and is therefore driving purple fast times. The Argentinian may enjoy that for a while.
58 minutes left: It is not busy on the track, as usual in the third free practice. However, the McLarens are already on the track, with the hard tires on the car.
Green light: We have started!
Verstappen is mainly looking for recovery after his outright bad Friday. There is a good chance that other (better) engine positions will make some difference. Red Bull is known for being quite conservative here on Friday. Especially with the large wings on the car in the Hungaroring, that makes a lot of difference.
We are going to start in Hungary, with an outside temperature of 26.2 degrees and a track temperature of 47.3 degrees.
