Lieke Martens may have already played her last match as a professional. The 32-year-old forward told the NOS on Sunday that she is considering ending her career.
“Everything has to be perfect for me to continue playing football,” Martens said. “I don’t know if that perfect picture will come. There are offers, but the priorities have changed.”
“I became a mother four months ago. Benjamin (Van Leer, ed.) and I are very happy, we are in a good place and it is going very well. I also want to be a good mother to Lowen.”
Martens talked about it in the television studio, where she joined as an analyst for the European Championship for women. Last year Martens already said goodbye as an international for Orange. She was still under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until this summer, but is now without a club.
“I am a very satisfied woman and have had a great career so far,” said the European Footballer of the Year in 2017. In that year she also celebrated her greatest success: she won the European Championship with the Orange women in her own country.
In club football, Martens played for FC Barcelona for many years in addition to PSG. In the Netherlands she wore the shirt of sc Heerenveen and VVV-Venlo.
