Lida Dijkstra wins Golden Granger for Youth Book about Travel Marco Polo

Author Lida Dijkstra won the Golden Granger on Wednesday for the Youth Book The Wonder narrator about the journeys of Marco Polo. This year the Golden Brush went to an incredibly large, incredibly dangerous iguana by illustrator Natascha Stenvert and writer Pim Lammers.

The Golden Granger and Brush are the best known and most prestigious jury prizes for children’s books in the Netherlands. The Granger is awarded to the best written book and the brush to the best illustrated book.

Dijkstra received the Golden Granger during a school visit in Friesland. Her book The Wonderfulteller is about the journeys of Marco Polo, through the eyes of a girl who played an important role in the adventures of the traveler.

The jury says it is “deeply impressed by the way the author brings a history to life in a new form”. “In addition to a lot of craftsmanship, there is great freedom, playfulness and literary power of this book.”

The book by Lammers and Stenvert is about a boy who himself comes up with a family with three fathers, two mothers, twelve brothers and sisters and an iguana. According to the jury, Stenvert “with its images creates an instant new classic, which fascinates the readers and is relevant for the present time”. “Here she shows her mastery in the delicate emotions she transfers to the reader.”

Boekenkoepel CPNB announces the winners every year in the run -up to the Children’s Book Week, which will start on Wednesday 1 October. The winners receive a Golden Granger or Brush and an amount of 10,000 euros.
