Lelystad Center station nominated as one of new national monuments

Fifteen Structures Built After 1965 Have Been Nominated As New National Monuments. These include Lelystad Center Station and the Brutalist Town Hall of Terneuzen. Each of Them Provides a Picture of the Netherlands in the Period Between 1965 and 1990.

The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) Nominated the Locations on Thursday because they show the development of the Netherlands. For Example, The Lelystad Station from 1988 Shows How the Station Architecture of the Netherlands Has Changed. Since the 1980S, NS HAS Opted for More Modern Stations with Plenty of Light And Space.

The Town Hall of Terneuzen from 1972 has bone nominated because the building is SEEN as one of the highlights of brutalist architecture in the Netherlands. And the Kasbah in Hengelo is a housing project of two hundred houses from 1973. As a National Monument, The District is an Example of Housing Construction in the 1970S.

The New National Monuments also pay Attention to Religious Developments in the Period in Question. For Example, The Emmaus Church in Nieuwegein (from 1977) Symbolizes Church Buildings That Are Less Noticeable as Churches on the Outside and Blend in More With the Residential Areas. The Newer Houses of Worship Show That the Church Has Lost Its Central Role in Society.

In Addition, there were also more houses of worship or other religions. The Yunus Emre Mosque in Almelo Will Symbolize this as a National Monument. The Mosque from 1974 is The First Dutch Mosque with a Minaret and Dome.

‘Appreciation of Comes later’

Many of the nominated structures may not seem that old because the buildings play a role in Daily Life. Yet, accordance to the rce, it is good to designate them as national monuments already. “They are all unique in their child,” Says RCE director Susan Lammers. “Protecting them now is necessary, appreciation of only comes later.”

The Nomination Starts The Process of Turning the Structures Into National Monuments. After that, it is up to muticipalities and provinces to accept the nomination. The RCE Expects The National Monuments to Be Official Designed As National Monuments within Six Months.
