A rock from Mars was auctioned from Mars on Wednesday in New York for $ 5.3 million (around 4.6 million euros). The meteorite of almost 25 kilos is the largest ever found on earth.
The rock is more than 38 centimeters in size and has been named NWA 16788. The stone was discovered in 2023 in a remote area in Niger. It is about the largest meteorite from Mars that was once found, reports Sotheby’s auction house.
Sotheby’s estimated the price in advance at 2 to 4 million dollars. The auction house did not disclose the buyer of the stone. It is also unknown where the meteorite is going.
“This is the biggest piece of Mars on earth. The chance that this will come from there is astronomical small,” says Cassandra Hatton, vice -president of the Science and Natural History at Sotheby’s, in a video.
“Remember that about 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water. So we were very lucky that this ended up on dry land instead of in the middle of the ocean, so that we could actually find it.”
