Kuijt became a trainer at Dordrecht after the call of journalist: 'He first doubted'

Dirk Kuijt initially wasn’t keen on becoming the coach of FC Dordrecht. A call from a journalist led the former international to come to Dordrecht after all, director Hans de Zeeuw said on Monday at the press presentation.

“I already tried it last year, but it was hopeless then,” said De Zeeuw, quoted by ESPN. “A few weeks ago I had contact with Kuijt, but I heard doubts from him about the Keuken Kampioen Divisie.”

“Later I was called by a journalist from ESPN. He had heard from a reliable source that Kuijt wanted to come to FC Dordrecht after all. Then I called him again. After five minutes with Kuijt and his agent, we agreed.”

Kuijt succeeds Melvin Boel at the Krommedijk, who left for Go Ahead Eagles. The former Feyenoord player was previously fired from Belgian Beerschot earlier this month and was therefore available. He previously worked at ADO Den Haag.

“I think it’s great that FC Dordrecht is choosing me after everything that has been written about me. They have also only looked at my performance as a coach, not as a player,” said Kuijt. “I am now on the right track, but you have to prove yourself every time.”

Kuijt will make his debut as coach of FC Dordrecht in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie on August 8. Then SC Cambuur is the opponent. FC Dordrecht was close to promotion last season, but the club lost in the semi-finals of the play-offs via penalties to Willem II.
