Olav Kooij is zondag lovend over zijn ploeggenoten van Visma-Lease a Bike na zijn zege in de slotrit van de Giro d’Italia. De Nederlander boekte in Rome zijn tweede ritzege in de Italiaanse wielerronde.
“We hadden een plan, maar in de sprint is het nooit gemakkelijk om het perfect te doen”, zei Kooij na afloop. “Vandaag zijn we er met het hele team vol voor gegaan.”
De 23-jarige Kooij werd door zijn ploeggenoten Edoardo Affini en Wout van Aert in een zetel naar de finish gebracht. ‘Het Jachtluipaard van Numansdorp’ maakte het karwei vervolgens af door de Australiër Kaden Groves voor te blijven.
“Eerst hebben we er een sprint van gemaakt en daarna gingen Edo en Wout all-in. We zaten perfect gepositioneerd. Ik ben blij dat ik het kon afmaken.”

‘Heel speciaal dat ik in Rome win’
Voor Visma-Lease a Bike was het zondag dubbel feest. De Nederlandse ploeg greep niet alleen de ritzege, maar ook de eindoverwinning. Simon Yates nam de roze trui zaterdag over van Isaac del Toro en stelde de eindzege een dag later veilig.
“We hadden ons geen beter slotweekend kunnen wensen”, zei Kooij. “Gisteren was echt geweldig voor het team. Vandaag heb ik alles gegeven wat ik nog in de benen had. Ik was al heel blij met deze Giro. Dat ik Rome haal en hier win, is heel speciaal.”
Voorafgaand aan de slotrit hield het Giro-peloton een minuut stilte ter nagedachtenis aan de overleden Daisy Gesink, de vrouw van Robert Gesink. De oud-ploeggenoten van Gesink bij Visma-Lease a Bike stonden op de eerste rij.
“Het was een speciale dag voor het hele team. Met iedereen in gedachten, was het een speciale dag”, doelde Kooij ook op het overlijden van Daisy Gesink.

“We had a plan, but in the sprint it’s never easy to do it perfectly,” Kooij said afterwards. “Today we went all out with the whole team.”
The 23-year-old Kooij was brought to the finish in style by his teammates Edoardo Affini and Wout van Aert. ‘The Cheetah of Numansdorp’ then finished the job by staying ahead of Australian Kaden Groves.
“First we made it a sprint and then Edo and Wout went all-in. We were perfectly positioned. I’m glad I could finish it.”

‘Very special that I win in Rome’
For Visma-Lease a Bike it was a double celebration on Sunday. The Dutch team not only grabbed the stage victory, but also the overall victory. Simon Yates took the pink jersey from Isaac del Toro on Saturday and secured the overall victory a day later.
“We couldn’t have wished for a better final weekend,” said Kooij. “Yesterday was really great for the team. Today I gave everything I had left in my legs. I was already very happy with this Giro. The fact that I reached Rome and win here is very special.”
Prior to the final stage, the Giro peloton held a minute’s silence in memory of the deceased Daisy Gesink, the wife of Robert Gesink. Gesink’s former teammates at Visma-Lease a Bike were in the front row.
“It was a special day for the whole team. With everyone in mind, it was a special day,” Kooij also referred to the death of Daisy Gesink.
