Ronald Koeman is geschrokken van het niet nieuws dat Ajax-spits Brian Brobbey sinds eind 2022 langere tijd werd afgeperst. De bondscoach van Oranje werd er donderdag al van op de hoogte gesteld, waarna Het Parool er vrijdag over berichtte.
“Het is heftig. Maar dat het gebeurt, verrast me niet. Helaas. Er gebeurt veel meer dan wij weten, denk ik”, zei Koeman vrijdagavond op een persconferentie in Helsinki, waar het Nederlands elftal zaterdag de WK-kwalificatiereeks start tegen Finland.
“Toch is het schrikken dat Brobbey en ook zijn familie bij zoiets betrokken zijn”, vervolgde Koeman. “Dat gun je niemand. Het is zeer kwalijk.”
Koeman wist niet dat deze zaak lange tijd speelde rond Brobbey, al was de 23-jarige aanvaller het afgelopen anderhalf jaar een vaste naam in de Oranjeselectie. De afperser eiste 150.000 euro van Brobbey. Op huizen en auto’s van naasten werden meerdere aanslagen gepleegd. En een vriend van Brobbey werd neergeschoten, maar overleefde.
“Ik wist er niks van, tot gisteren”, vervolgde Koeman. “De KNVB kreeg gisteren van Ajax bericht dat dit naar buiten zou komen. Of ik het eerder had willen weten? Dat weet ik niet. Ik las dat Brobbey het achter zich wil laten. Dat moeten we respecteren.”
Zaak is ‘gesloten boek’ voor Brobbey
Brobbey reageerde vrijdagmiddag via De Telegraaf op het nieuws. “Wat privé is, hoort privé te blijven. Dit verhaal is voor mij een gesloten boek. Achteruit kijken leidt tot niks. Ik concentreer me op de toekomst”, zei de achtvoudig international, die momenteel niet tot de Oranjeselectie behoort.
Cody Gakpo, die naast Koeman zat op de persconferentie, werd ook gevraagd naar het nieuws over Brobbey. “Ik heb het eerlijk gezegd nog niet gelezen”, reageerde de aanvaller van Liverpool. “Maar het is wel een kwalijke zaak. Dit is niet fijn.”

Koeman was unaware that this case had been going on around Brobbey for a long time, although the 23-year-old attacker has been a regular in the Dutch national team selection for the past year and a half. The blackmailer demanded 150,000 euros from Brobbey. Several attacks were carried out on the homes and cars of relatives. And a friend of Brobbey was shot, but survived.
“I didn’t know anything about it until yesterday,” Koeman continued. “The KNVB received a message from Ajax yesterday that this would come out. Would I have wanted to know sooner? I don’t know. I read that Brobbey wants to put it behind him. We have to respect that.”
Case is a ‘closed book’ for Brobbey
Brobbey responded to the news on Friday afternoon via De Telegraaf. “What is private should remain private. This story is a closed book for me. Looking backwards leads to nothing. I am concentrating on the future,” said the eight-time international, who is not currently part of the Dutch national team selection.
Cody Gakpo, who was sitting next to Koeman at the press conference, was also asked about the news about Brobbey. “To be honest, I haven’t read it yet,” the Liverpool attacker responded. “But it is a bad thing. This is not good.”
