KNVB wants to suspend FC Groningen-keeper Vaessen three duels, Kaplan goes freely

The public prosecutor for professional football has offered FC Groningen goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen a settlement proposal of a four-match suspension, one of which is conditional. The goalkeeper misbehaved after the Eredivisie match against Ajax. Defender Ahmetcan Kaplan will not be prosecuted.

After the 2-2 draw last week, tempers flared. Players and staff members of FC Groningen and Ajax clashed. Vaessen played a particularly negative role in this, dealing some heavy blows.

According to the public prosecutor for professional football, the goalkeeper committed “an act of violence.” Vaessen now has the choice to accept the penalty or go to the KNVB disciplinary committee.

Ajax defender Ahmetcan Kaplan also had to fear a penalty after the fight in the Euroborg, but he has not been suspended. That case has been dismissed.

FC Groningen-Ajax ended in a 2-2 draw after a late goal from the home team. Due to the loss of points, Ajax lost the top position in that match to PSV, which secured the national title last weekend.

Vaessen did not participate in the last league match of the season against PEC Zwolle (2-0 defeat) last weekend. He received his fifth yellow card of the season against Ajax and was therefore suspended.
