Kettlebells sold by Action may be slightly radioactive

Kettlebells of 10 kilos that were sold at Action between July 28 and August 8, may be light radioactive. The Nuclear Security and Radiation Protection (ANVS) Authority reports this on Thursday. The health risks are “very limited”.

These are kettlebells of 10 kilos in the colors pink, blue and gray. She recalls via Chassé, the wholesaler who has delivered the Kettlebells to Action. A kettlebell is a training weight in the form of a ball with a handle (see photo above).

The health risk of these radioactive substances is very limited, reports the AVNS. The recall is therefore a precautionary measure. Not all Kettlebells that meet the aforementioned conditions contain radioactive substances. The amount of radiation per kettlebell also differs.

The kettlebells contain sand that can naturally contain radioactive substances, the ANVS reports. With a few kettlebells it has been established that radioactivity exceeds the legal limit for consumer products.

There are a lot of things that issue a small amount of radiation. On average, a person in the Netherlands is exposed to 2.6 millisievers radiation annually, the RIVM reports.

For an hour the kettlebell with the highest measured radiation on your lap, exposes you to less than 0.0014 millisievers. For comparison: an X -ray gives an exposure of approximately 0.1 millisieves. The maximum permitted amount per year for someone who works with radiation is 20 millisieves.
