Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro will miss the European Championship with Jong Oranje this month. The AZ goalkeeper dropped out on Saturday due to an injury. Club Brugge goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel is his replacement.
Owusu-Oduro played half a match on Friday evening in the farewell game against Jong Ivory Coast (3-0 victory), but appears to have sustained an injury in that match. The KNVB has not disclosed what the goalkeeper is suffering from.
Owusu-Oduro was the intended first goalkeeper of coach Michael Reiziger’s team at the European Championship. For NEC keeper Robin Roefs, a starting spot now beckons. The 22-year-old goalie has had a good season and is reportedly of interest to Ajax.
Calvin Raatsie of Excelsior is the new second keeper, while Van den Heuvel will take on the role of third goalkeeper. Van den Heuvel debuted in March 2024 for the Dutch U21 team. At Club Brugge, he is the third goalkeeper.
Jong Oranje starts the European Championship under 21 in Slovakia next week on Thursday. Jong Finland is the first opponent. Furthermore, matches against Jong Denmark and Jong Ukraine await in the group stage. The final of the youth European Championship is on June 28.
