Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, all NATO countries, are jointly purchasing approximately $500 million (over €430 million) worth of weapons for Ukraine. These countries are joining a NATO initiative that allows countries to purchase American weapons and ammunition for Ukraine. The Netherlands already did so on Monday.
Denmark, Sweden, and Norway will finance, among other things, air defense systems, anti-tank systems, ammunition, and spare parts, according to a statement.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced last month that Ukraine would be provided with various military aid packages through NATO countries. Member states pay for the weapons, which are then given to Ukraine. This way, material support goes to Kyiv without the U.S. having to pay for it financially.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has welcomed the decision of the Nordic countries. “Grateful for the quick action of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden to finance a package of U.S. military aid for Ukraine,” he stated on X. The Secretary-General of the alliance says that the support brings “life-saving equipment and crucial supplies” to the front.
The Dutch package of €500 million includes, among other things, parts for Patriot systems and missiles. “Ukraine urgently needs more air defense and ammunition,” wrote outgoing Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans on Monday on X.
