Cyclist Juan Ayuso found a new team after his controversial departure at UAE Team Emirates. The 23-year-old Spaniard will continue his career from 2026 at Lidl-Trek, where he has signed a five-year contract.
Ayuso has to become the leader in the big rounds with the originally German team, which this year still has to have day successes. In addition, Mads Pedersen won the points classification in the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España. Jonathan Milan won the green sweater in the Tour de France.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” says Ayuso on Thursday in a Lidl-Trek press release. “This is an important new chapter in my career. Lidl trek feels like a place where I can develop well. The team has the ambition to become the best in the world. I am looking forward to making my contribution.”
Ayuso has been driving for Uae Team Emirates since his teenage years. In 2022, just before his twentieth birthday, he debuted with a third place in the Vuelta a España. A year later he became fourth. In the last edition, Ayuso did not ride for the rankings, but did book his first two individual stage victories in a big round.
But partly due to the presence of Tadej Pogacar, João Almedia and Isaac del Toro, Ayuso never became the undisputed leader with his team. In large rounds he also did little headwork for Pogacar and Almeida. Internally there would have been dissatisfaction with his attitude for some time.
Controversial departure during Vuelta
Strikingly enough, UAE Team Emirates announced during the Vuelta that the continuous contract of Ayuso would be dissolved. “Our sporting project has always been focused on continuity, unity in the group and building a winning team,” said team boss Mauro Gianetti. “With the best of intentions for both parties, this is the best decision.”
Ayuso then hit hard. “I knew nothing of nothing until yesterday at half past six in the evening,” he responded a day later. “I don’t understand why this had to be done so suddenly and without first informing me. They want to harm my image again.” The Spaniard compared his team with “a dictatorship”. “I would have liked a good ending with the team, but sometimes it seems like that is not possible.”
At Lidl-Trek, Ayuso meets two Dutch people: Bauke Mollema and Sam Oomen. National time trial champion Daan Hole is just leaving the team. He signed with the French Decathlon CMA CGM, the former AG2R.
