Journalist Derk Sauer commemorated in mourning advertisements: 'He still had so many plans'

Derk Sauer has been commemorated by family, friends and colleagues in NRC with five pages of funeral advertisements. The journalist and media entrepreneur is described by his family as “selfless and fearless”.

“He still had so many plans, but had peace with his destiny,” write the wife and children of Sauer. The founder of The Moscow Times, among others, died last week at the age of 72 from the consequences of an accident on the family’s sailing boat.

Mayor Femke Halsema praises Sauer on behalf of the municipality of Amsterdam for his significance for the free press in Russia, “and in Amsterdam he has also contributed to independent media for decades”.

The newspaper also contains advertisements from NRC, Het Parool and other organizations to which Sauer was associated, such as Documentary Festival IDFA and human rights organization Human Rights Watch.

His media titles The Moscow Times and Meduza praise the inspiring ideas that Sauer leaves behind. “His dedication to freedom of the press and non-reversing support for an independent sound are a lasting inspiration for anyone who believes in the role of journalism within a democracy,” says Meduza’s advertisement. The Moscow Times adds: “But above all he was a very nice man.”

TV Rain TV station, which, due to the help of Sauer after the Russian invasion in 2022, was sheltered in Amsterdam, thanks the media entrepreneur: “He owed us nothing, but gave us everything. We will never forget that.”
