Jobe Bellingham follows his brother's footsteps with transfer to Dortmund

Jobe Bellingham has followed in the footsteps of his older brother Jude with a transfer to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. The midfielder is transferring from Sunderland for over 30 million euros.

The nineteen-year-old Bellingham made an important contribution last season as a controlling midfielder to Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League. He played almost all matches for ‘The Black Cats’, who will compete in the highest level of England for the first time since 2017 next season.

Bellingham will not experience the adventure in the Premier League. Dortmund is paying 33 million euros, according to German media, to take over the English youth international. That amount can increase to 38 million euros through bonuses.

Bellingham is signing a five-year contract with the number four of the past Bundesliga season. He can already be used at the upcoming Club World Cup. Dortmund starts the global club tournament in the United States next week Monday with a match against Fluminense.

With that, Bellingham follows the same career path as his brother Jude, who caused a furore at Borussia Dortmund from 2020 to 2023. Since the summer of 2023, he has played for Real Madrid, which took him over for no less than 113 million euros.

“I am happy to now be a player of Borussia Dortmund and to compete for prizes with this great club,” says Bellingham on the Dortmund website. Technical director Sebastian Kehl hopes that the comparisons with Jude Bellingham will not happen. “Jobe wants and will follow his own path at Dortmund.”
