Jan Roos must appear before the magistrate in Leeuwarden on November 5. The program maker is being prosecuted for incitement following statements he made last year on his YouTube channel RoddelPraat.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced in November that a criminal investigation had been launched into Roos because the channel “called for violence and made a suggestion on how to deal with journalists on Ameland on and around the Sunneklaas festival.”
In a video on his channel, Roos advised islanders to unite “with pitchforks and torches” and “kick journalists off the island.” The 48-year-old presenter was arrested and questioned. According to him, the remarks were “obviously a joke.”
Roos responded with his remarks to the journalists from broadcaster PowNed who went to Ameland on December 5, 2023, to make a report about Sunneklaas. That is an alternative Sinterklaas celebration that is only celebrated on the Wadden Island.
Residents of Ameland wanted to prevent the journalists from entering the island and therefore attacked them. This week, two Amelanders were sentenced to community service.
Last month, the message followed that Roos is being prosecuted. A week before the hearing of the case, it will be shared on what basis Roos is being prosecuted.
