More than two hundred international newspapers, news channels and other media channels go black at the same time to protest against the death of journalists in the Gaza Strip. AVAAZ action group and journalist organizations Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) report this.
“For the first time in modern history, editors will coordinate a large -scale editorial protest on all continents,” says a joint statement. Broadcasts will be stopped, front pages kept empty and news sites will not be accessible.
According to the organizers, at least 210 journalists have been killed since the start of the war in Gaza. This would be the deadliest conflict for reporters in recent history.
“With the pace at which journalists in Gaza are killed by the Israeli army, no one will soon be left to keep the world informed,” says RSF director Thibaut Bruttin. “This is not just a war against Gaza, it is a war against journalism itself.”
The organizations and media also call on Israel to allow foreign journalists to the Gaza Strip. Since October 2023, almost only Palestinian journalists have been active in the war zone.
The participating media come from fifty countries from all over the world. Among other things, the Qatarese news channel Al Jazeera , the American broadcaster NPR, the British newspaper The Independent and the Spanish news agency EFE have joined the promotion. World Press Photo and NRC from the Netherlands participate.
