Inter van scoring De Vrij must leave Napoli national title in the last round of play

Napoli has been crowned champion of Italy on Friday. The powerhouse won 2-0 against Cagliari in the last match of the season. Rival Inter Milan briefly held the title lead with a goal from Stefan de Vrij against Como (0-2), but ultimately finished second.

The matches of Napoli and Inter were moved to Friday, as both clubs could theoretically end up with the same number of points. If Napoli were to lose and Inter draw, they would both have 79 points. Then there would be a deciding match between Napoli and Inter.

If Inter were to win and Napoli lose points, the club from Milan would have taken the title. De Vrij put Inter on the right track by heading in the first half. But just before halftime, Scott McTominay scored a beautiful half-volley for Napoli against Cagliari, giving the club from Naples the title within reach again.

In the second half, Romelu Lukaku put an end to all doubts by making it 2-0 for Napoli. Inter also scored via Joaquín Correa, but that was only for the statistics. Como played with ten men for a long time, because the departing goalkeeper Pepe Reina (42) received a red card in his last match.

Napoli was previously champion in 1987, 1990 and 2023. The team finished tenth in Serie A last season, but found its way back to the top under Antonio Conte last year. The coach saw his star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia leave for Paris Saint-Germain in the winter break, but still led his team to the title.

For Inter, the season is not over yet. The club will face PSG next Saturday in the Champions League final. Coach Simone Inzaghi was already taking that final into account. He did not let Denzel Dumfries and his strikers Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram appear at the kick-off. Dumfries played the last half hour against Como.
