Four men have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from twenty to thirty years in appeal for their involvement in the so-called mistaken identity killing in Beuningen in 2020. The main suspect was also convicted of two other crimes. Two suspects were acquitted.

Mehmet Kiliçsoy, a handyman from Nijmegen, was shot dead from a car in Beuningen, Gelderland, on July 6, 2020. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), everything indicates that it was a case of mistaken identity, as the police could not find any motive.

A total of seven suspects were arrested. The main suspect, Jomairo D., received the heaviest sentence of thirty years in prison. According to the Arnhem-Leeuwarden Court of Appeal, he acted as a “murder broker” and sent others out to commit the murder. In addition to the mistaken identity killing in Beuningen, he was also involved in an attempted murder in Tienhoven and the preparation of a murder in Amsterdam.

The OM had demanded life imprisonment against D. The court does not believe that the case belongs “to the category of cases for which a life sentence must be imposed.” Thirty years is the highest possible temporary prison sentence, the court says.

Three other suspects were all sentenced to twenty years in prison for their involvement in the murder in Beuningen. One suspect received one year in prison. Two suspects were acquitted in the case, as the court saw insufficient evidence to reach a conviction. One of them had previously been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the case in Amsterdam.

The court heavily weighed the fact that the men acted “fearlessly, ruthlessly and shockingly laconically.” “It is very bitter that completely innocent people have become involved in firearms violence in the criminal underworld.”
