Jannik Sinner convincingly reached the second round of Wimbledon on Tuesday. The world number one won against his compatriot Luca Nardi without losing a set. The third-seeded Alexander Zverev was surprisingly eliminated.
Nardi was able to keep up with the 23-year-old Sinner for a long time in the first set, but after a break in the last game, the match on court 1 was actually already decided. The Italian Sinner was clearly a size too big for his compatriot.
Sinner only needed 1 hour and 49 minutes to beat Nardi, the number 95 in the world rankings. This meant he was on the court almost three hours less than his rival Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard worked overtime on Monday to defeat Fabio Fognini.
In the second round, Sinner will face the Australian Aleksandar Vukic, who is 93rd in the world rankings. Alcaraz will play against the British amateur Oliver Tarvet on Wednesday. Sinner and Alcaraz can only meet in the final.
Sinner has never won Wimbledon. The Italian’s best performance at the Grand Slam tournament in London is a semi-final place (in 2023). Last year he lost in the quarter-finals to Daniil Medvedev. Sinner did win the Australian Open (2024 and 2025) and the US Open (2024).
Zverev, Musetti and Bublik already out in London
Sinner no longer has to take into account the world number three Zverev at Wimbledon. The German was eliminated in the first round by the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. After a marathon match of almost five hours, he lost in five sets: 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5) and 6-4.
Zverev’s elimination is a big surprise. Two weeks ago he was still in the final of the Stuttgart grass tournament. He has a bad relationship with Wimbledon: he never got past the fourth round in London. He has not won a Grand Slam title at all.
Wimbledon is also over for Lorenzo Musetti. The number seven in the world could not cope with the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili: 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 and 6-1. Last year Musetti reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
Alexander Bublik can also go home. The Kazakh won the grass tournament in Halle, Germany a week ago, but he now had to admit defeat against the Spaniard Jaume Munar: 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5) and 6-2.
The British hope Jack Draper did reach the second round. The number four in the world saw his Argentinian opponent Sebastián Báez give up with an injury. At that moment Draper was leading 2-0 in sets. He plays against the Croatian service cannon Marin Cilic in the second round.
