Ihattaren excludes that he once plays for the Orange: ‘The whole of the Netherlands was against me’

Mohamed Ihattaren does not intend to come out for the Dutch national team. The Fortuna Sittard attacker says that from now on he opts for Morocco, he was once allowed to be selected for the national team.

“The Netherlands is completely excluded,” Ihattaren told ESPN . “I’m going to play 100 percent for the Moroccan team. I play for Morocco or don’t play international matches.”

As a teenager, Ihattaren was one of the greatest talents in the Netherlands, but due to problems outside the field he ended up on a side track.

“In the time when things went a little less, the whole of the Netherlands was against me,” says Ihattaren. “Then you are seen as a Moroccan. If things go well again, you are one of them. That’s how I experienced it.”

From 2017 to 2019, Ihattaren still played in the youth teams of Oranje. In 2019 he said after conversations with the KNVB and national coach Ronald Koeman to choose an international career in the Dutch national team, but it never came to a debut.

‘The love I experienced in Morocco is very different’

At the beginning of this year, the 23-year-old Ihattaren was still being polled by the KNVB for the Dutch Juniors. He then announced that he felt honored, but not yet working on international football. “I just want to play football now,” he said. Five months later he opts for Morocco.

“I am thoroughbred Moroccan and raised in the Netherlands,” says Ihattaren. “The love I have experienced in Morocco from the people there is very different. Sure, you are in the Netherlands. But putting on the Oranjeshirt will never happen again.”
