Jeffrey Herlings has won a race in the MXGP for the first time since August last year. The five-time world champion won the Grand Prix in Teutschenthal, Germany on Sunday.
Herlings finished second in the first heat in Germany, but he won the second heat. In the first race, he had to tolerate the Belgian Lucas Coenen just ahead of him, but later in the day he was too fast for him.
Herlings was last the best over two heats in the summer of last year. That was in front of his own crowd, at Papendal. In September he did win a heat in Spain, but he did not win the Grand Prix there. That is decided over two heats.
The thirty-year-old Herlings made his return at the beginning of April, after tearing a cruciate ligament in his right knee in Valkenswaard in October last year.
In the World Championship standings, Frenchman Romain Febvre leads after ten of the twenty races with 487 points. Young Belgian Coenen, only eighteen years old, follows with 451 points. Herlings is in tenth place in the standings because he missed three race weekends. Glenn Coldenhoff is in fourth place in the World Championship standings.
Next weekend is the Grand Prix of Latvia. Arnhem will be visited on August 24.
