HAVO students in Harderwijk do not have to take over final exams

The 25 senior high school students from a school in Harderwijk will not have to retake their English final exam. The exams went missing when RSG Slingerbos sent them to another school for a second correction.

State Secretary Mariƫlle Paul (OCW) has decided that the result will be determined based on the first correction. Students who still want a second check can choose to retake the exam.

“I think a second correction is very important, but this is an exceptional situation,” says Paul. “For me, the adverse effects on the students weigh more heavily. They would have to retake the exam, while they could do nothing about the cause of it.”

RSG Slingerbos had not made copies of the completed exam forms. The tests reportedly arrived at the second school, but went missing there. According to Omroep Gelderland, a search was conducted everywhere.

The final exams were declared invalid. The students were supposed to retake their exam during the second period on June 23. But Paul is now abandoning that.

“This case proves how important it is for a school to make a copy or scan of a completed exam,” says the State Secretary. “In light of this case, I want to see whether such an additional requirement should be placed on the exam process in the interest of the students.”
