Hamilton after driving forestmarmot during GP Canada: 'I'm so sad about this'

Lewis Hamilton finds it “terrible” that he ran over a woodchuck during the Canadian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion was distraught by the incident.

“I felt that I hit something, I didn’t know what it was. People are now saying it was a woodchuck, that’s terrible to hear,” Hamilton told Sky Sports after the race.

“I love animals, I’m so sad about this here. It’s terrible. This has never happened to me here.”

Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur said that Hamilton ran over the groundhog after about eight or nine laps. Hamilton’s car was damaged in the process. The damage to the floor made his Ferrari half a second slower per lap.

“Until that moment I felt pretty good. I had a good start and was able to keep up well. After that there was a hole in the right side of the floor,” Hamilton said.

Partly due to the collision, the driver did not get further than sixth place in Montreal. George Russell, Hamilton’s former teammate at Mercedes, won the Grand Prix.
