Trainer Josep Guardiola is lovend over Tijjani Reijnders, die woensdag op het WK voor clubs in de Verenigde Staten zijn debuut maakte voor Manchester City. De Oranje-international speelde de hele wedstrijd tegen Wydad Casablanca.
“Hij is een goede speler, echt heel goed”, zei Guardiola na de 2-0-zege van City in het Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. “Dat kun je voelen, dat kun je ruiken. Als hij in zijn ritme komt, is hij top.”
Reijnders speelde tegen Wydad Casablanca als verdedigende middenvelder. Dat ging hem volgens Guardiola goed af, maar de 26-jarige middenvelder is eigenlijk gehaald voor een andere positie. Tijdens de onderhandelingen zei de directie van City tegen Reijnders dat hij “prioriteit was voor de positie van nummer 8 op het middenveld”.
Guardiola zei woensdag ook dat Reijnders waarschijnlijk op een andere plek speelt als in augustus de Premier League van start gaat. “We hebben Nico González ook voor de positie waar Reijnders nu speelde. En Mateo Kovacic komt terug. Ik zie Reijnders vooral voor de posities hoger op het middenveld.” Kovacic staat voorlopig nog aan de kant na een achillespeesoperatie.

“He is a good player, really very good,” Guardiola said after City’s 2-0 victory in the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. “You can feel that, you can smell that. When he gets into his rhythm, he’s top.”
Reijnders played against Wydad Casablanca as a defensive midfielder. According to Guardiola, he did well, but the 26-year-old midfielder was actually brought in for a different position. During the negotiations, the City management told Reijnders that he was “a priority for the number 8 position in midfield.”
Guardiola also said on Wednesday that Reijnders will probably play in a different position when the Premier League starts in August. “We also have Nico González for the position where Reijnders now played. And Mateo Kovacic is coming back. I mainly see Reijnders for the positions higher up in midfield.” Kovacic is still on the sidelines for the time being after an Achilles tendon surgery.
