Griekspoor Relieved after scoop on Roland Garros: ‘Had had to be earlier’

Tallon Griekspoor

Tallon Griekspoor is relieved that he finally removed the second week of a Grand Slam tournament. There is a burden on his shoulders in Paris, but there is no question of a festive mood.

Fifteen minutes after his won competition, a very calm Greek track runs through the press room. “Of course it is a nice scoop, but one that I should have achieved before,” says the number 35 in the world in Paris.

Griekspoor is in the eighth finals of a Grand Slam for the first time. Dutch men’s tennis had been waiting for a fourth round in Paris for 22 years. Martin Verkerk was the last Dutchman to get the second week in 2003.

“It’s nice to hear that I follow him, but it is especially nice for myself that I finally get that fourth round of a grand slam,” says Griekspoor. “That is very special.”

In recent years, Griekspoor has been close to the second week a number of times. “But for whatever reason I didn’t succeed. I haven’t played great tennis now, but I fought myself through it. I am happy with that.”

‘I am no longer sixteen’

Despite the tough five -setter against Ethan Quinn, Griekspoor kept his confidence the entire game. Prior to the third round, he announced that he had tension because of his favorite role.

“But that was not so bad on the track,” says Griekspoor. “I handled it well today. I am not sixteen anymore.”

During other games last week he was regularly frustrated and destroyed a racket. That was not the case now.

“Of course I could have made it easier for myself,” Griekspoor admits. “But it is and remains a third round of a Grand Slam. Everyone expects you to win and he had nothing to lose. I can be very happy with this.
