Tallon Griekspoor experienced a convincing comeback after an injury on Tuesday. The leader of Dutch tennis defeated American Ethan Quinn in the round of sixteen of the Mallorca grass tournament (7-5 and 6-4), winning his first match towards Wimbledon.
The 28-year-old Griekspoor had to give up in the round of sixteen of Roland Garros earlier this month with an abdominal muscle injury, after which the tennis player was out of action for three weeks. As a result of the injury, he missed the Rosmalen grass tournament.
A week before the start of Wimbledon, Griekspoor made his appearance on the grass of Mallorca, where he met an old acquaintance in 21-year-old Quinn. Three weeks ago, the two also faced each other at Roland Garros, and Griekspoor won in a thrilling five-setter.
In Mallorca, Griekspoor had a much easier time, although the victory did not come easily. He only took the first point deep in the first set. In the second set, the North Hollander quickly took a break lead, but Quinn worked that away. After that, Griekspoor still distanced himself.
For Griekspoor, it was not only his first match towards Wimbledon, but also his first match since his reunion with trainer Kristof Vliegen. Griekspoor has worked with Vliegen several times in the past, but has often changed coaches, especially recently.
Griekspoor will play in the quarterfinals of the grass tournament in Mallorca against the winner of the match between Canadian Gabriel Diallo and Laslo Djere from Serbia. That match is currently in progress. The 23-year-old Diallo won the Rosmalen grass tournament just over a week ago.
