The fire brigade in the German city of Wiesbaden was pulled out four times on Saturday for a fruit. Several people called because they thought they were smoking gas, but there was no question of a leak.
“In the end, the culprit turned out not to be a technical but of a botanical nature,” writes the city council in a statement.
The fire brigade received the first report about a gas smell in a shopping center on Saturday afternoon. A leak was not found, so after the building was ventilated, the emergency services withdrew. A new report arrived just under three hours later. The fire brigade started searching all stores, after which a Doerian was found in an Asian supermarket. That fruit is especially popular in Southeast Asia for its taste, but the sulfur scent is strongly reminiscent of gas.
In the course of the evening another report came in from the supermarket. Although the fire brigade already suspected that it was the same store again, a gas leak had to be excluded again.
The fourth report came in towards the end of the evening, from a residential building in the city. According to the municipality, the fire brigade commander saw the storm hanging when he saw a sign with an Asian name at the front door. The residents did indeed have just bought a Doerian at the same store.
A few years ago, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen viral went viral with a video from Red Bull Racing, in which he had to open and taste a Doerian prior to the Singapore Grand Prix. The Dutchman had to gag.
Enthusiasts compare the taste of Doerian with vanilla, caramel and almonds. The scent is often confused with a gas leak. For example, a gas company was called last month for a Doerian in Lancashire, British. The fruit is prohibited in the public transport of Singapore.
